Bollinger


Bollinger was established in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and Paul Renaudin. Over the years the vineyard holdings have been steadily increased with the largest expansion taking place under the stewardship of the legendary Mme Lily Bollinger. She ran the company between 1941 and 1977 and today it is managed by her great-nephew, Ghislain de Montgolfier.

Bollinger has a reputation for producing muscular wines with body, depth and power, and is today considered one of the "Great" Champagne houses. 70% of the grapes come from the firm's own vineyards. 80% of the harvest is barrel-fermented with the wines being kept on their yeast lees for an extended period of time (in the case of the RD, around 10 years).

Bollinger produces classic, complex, Pinot-dominated champagnes with the ability to age gracefully for many years.

This is an oak fermented wine, yes, but not the usual angular, quite taut Bollinger at this stage of its development. Instead a soft and creamy wine, with a luxurious and sumptuous texture, a fine and beautifully elegant mousse and hints of brioche and hazelnut to complement the fruit.

It's ripe, expressive and faithful to the vintage. Grand Cru fruit, 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, has been sourced from famous vineyards in the villages of Aÿ, Verzenay and Cuis. A different style of vintage Bollinger, certainly, but one which will be hard to resist in youth and which should be enjoyed over the next year or so.

"Bollinger are famed for their rich and savoury style of wines, dominated by Pinot Noir and underwritten by oak fermentation and extensive lees maturation. It seemed only a matter of time before the release of a non-vintage (multi-vintage perhaps) rosé and this wine, a long time in coming, has been well worth the wait. The fact that it has been projected straight to the top of the pricing echelon is less hubristic arrogance, more a reflection of the sheer quality of what is in the bottle.

Disgorged only last year and sourced from predominately Grand Cru vieyards, a wine to provide proof once again that Bollinger, who actually patented the RD name, are the masters of this art. Pinot Noir dominates the blend with a rich autolytic character. A savoury, smoky decedant experience.

Pinot Noir dominates the blend as sunshine dominated the year. Savoury, with hints of brioche and ripe white fruits, a relatively early maturing Bollinger, which is very good news for the legions of Bollinger fans who may wish to wait a little longer before attacking the 96s.

Bollinger's president, Ghislain de Montgolfier describes Grand Annee 1999 "as a superb wine, a cross-over of the powerful 1996 and the rich 1989". We couldn't agree more. The overall tasting profile is a very typical Bollinger with rich marzipan aromas, and notes of toffee and bread yeast. The palate is equally charming, yet powerful and structured, with nutty aromas, and some signs of maturity. Another great vintage for Bollinger.
