Berrys' Favourite White - Meursault, Le Tesson Jean-Philippe Fichet

Produced from very poor, stoney soil, Fichet’s Le Tesson is always an outstanding Meursault of striking minerality, and coincidentally one of the first to sell out each year!

Berrys' Favourite Red - Chambolle-Musigny, Les Cras Domaine Michèle et Patrice Rion

Patrice Rion is a Nuits-St Georges grower who shows great finesse with his Chambolles. Les Charmes is the more reputed vineyard, but for me Les Cras has staggering depth and class.

Personal Favourite of 2007 - Rully, Les Cloux, 1er Cru, Jean-Yves Devevey

A very refined, peachy example from an outstanding winemaker, Jean Yves’ Rully, Les Cloux, punches well above its weight and is such exceptional value that it is a regular purchase for me personally.

White Wine of the Vintage - Mâcon-La Roche Vineuse, Les Cras, Olivier Merlin

For the White Wine of the Vintage I have chosen Olivier’s single-vineyard Mâcon from Les Cras. This is a terrific site which always produces a wine of great depth of flavour and real class, but I could equally have sprung for one of his superb Pouilly-Fuissés.

Red Wine of the Vintage  - Nuits-St Georges, Clos de la Maréchale, 1er Cru Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

This wine is shown after the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares when tasting in Freddy Mugnier’s cellar, and it holds its place with distinction. His sensitive winemaking style works absolutely perfectly with this vineyard. Put some magnums away in the cellar without fail!

Personal Favourite of 2007  - Richebourg, Grand Cru, Domaine Jean Grivot

For each of the last few years this has been a prime candidate for Vintage. Etienne Grivot is breaking through into the ranks of internationally- renowned superstars, and this is his flagship wine. Stunning.

"Cellar-Must-Have" White Wine - Puligny-Montrachet, Ch. de Puligny-Montrachet

Etienne de Montille has reached new heights with the 2007 Ch. de Puligny range. This is absolutely spot-on, classic Puligny with an extra vibrancy and more breadth than many; superb value for a wine that will be best from 2010 to 2012.

"Cellar-Must-Have" Red Wine - Nuits-St Georges, Clos de la Maréchale, 1er Cru Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier

Frédéric Mugnier’s brilliant Clos de la Maréchale bears all the hallmarks of this most assured and supremely calm man. These attributes are reflected in the 2007 with its dark, rich fruits and elegant precision. 2011 to 2016 will see another opportunity to savour a wine from one of Burgundy’s finest producers.

Personal Favourite of 2007  - Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru, Sylvain Loichet

This wine from Sylvain Loichet could well prove to be one of the most longlived in the offer with its sheer density of fruit and concentrated tannin. Both wine and grower have a great future ahead. This will be drinking from 2015 to 2020, and quite probably beyond.

The White "One to Watch" - Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard

The delightful Caroline l’Estimé makes what I like to call ‘proper’Chassagne. These are wines with structure that age beautifully. Les Caillerets is Caroline’s favourite of her Premier Crus and I think it’s the classiest. It’s still a little closed on the nose at this stage but the Gagnard hallmarks of structure, class, length and balance are all here. An excellent wine and very, very Chassagne.

The Red "One to Watch"  - Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

Rossignol Trapet’s 2007 Chambertin screams ‘Grand Cru’ at you right from the second the perfume hits your nose. There are layers upon layers of rich complexity and there is still so much more to come out that is hidden underneath. The texture in the mouth is quite, quite beautiful. This is an outstanding wine, and a bargain to boot. Yes please.

Personal Favourite of 2007  - Pommard, Clos des Épeneaux, 1er Cru Domaine du Comte Armand 

The whisper from some is that Ben Leroux is a legend of the future, and I concur. The Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s best vineyard by a mile in my opinion, and can roughly be divided into two halves which Ben vinifies separately. Combined, they produce a simply stunning wine which is, in a word, complete. A definite for my cellar.

Best Biodynamic White Wine - Pouilly-Fuissé, Clos des Quarts, Olivier Merlin

From some of the oldest vines and arguably the best vineyard in the Mâcon, you should rightly expect this to be an exceptional wine and, once again, Merlin really delivers. The nose exudes rich, floral notes whilst the palate displays beautifully layered fruit; grab this whilst you can.

Best Biodynamic Red Wine - Nuits-St Georges, Les St Georges, 1er Cru Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault’s wines are often difficult to taste before bottling but the generous, elegant fruit make this a real pleasure. A rich, smooth palate remains pure and pretty throughout with hints of Nuits’ rusticity backed by good structure. Beautifully balanced, this oozes class and is not far from being a triumph for the vintage.

Personal Favourite of 2007  - Puligny-Montrachet, Ch. de Puligny-Montrachet

Improving year on year under the stewardship of Etienne de Montille, Ch.de Puligny-Montrachet is making quality wines, reflective of terroir, and at such an affordable price that they are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and therefore even more of a pleasure to drink! Wonderful.
