Madeira Wine Company

The Madeira Wine Association was established in 1913. In 1981 it changed its name to The Madeira Wine Company and in 1989 the Symington family took a controlling interest. There are four separate brands - Blandy`s, Rutherford & Miles, Cossart & Gordon and Leacock`s. At 5, 10, and 15 year levels only the noble varieties Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey are used. Single vintage Madeiras are also produced, which must spend a minimum of 20 years in cask followed by another two years in bottle.

The wines are made by the canteiro system and are subjected only to natural heating without estufagem during their minimum 3 years in cask. The very best Madeiras are capable of ageing for more than a century.
