Domaine de la Charbonniere
Domaine de la
Charbonnière was purchased by Eugene Maret in 1912. 90
years it is still a family-owned affair. The taciturn Michel Maret is a
man of the soil, his reticence more than compensated by the eloquence of his
wines, on the one hand, and the loquacious nature of his wife on the other. The
two charming daughters, Véronique and Caroline, have found
respective niches in the vineyard and the commercial function. All in all a
complete and happy team, a facet once again echoed in the wines.Domaine de la
Charbonniere owns 17.5 hectares of vineyards in the Châteauneuf
du Pape appellation, as well as 4 hectares in Vacqueyras. Michel
produces wonderfully well balanced wines that combine intensity and depth of
fruit with finesse and elegance.
Michel Maret produces a number of different cuvees all from low yields and
all bottled without filtration. His village cuvee is one of the best value
wines in the appellation while the Cuvée Traditionnelle is a
model of balance and purity of fruit.
The Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is produced from La Crau and is silkily
rich with marvellous ageing potential while the Hautes
Brusquières is a perennial favourite, atypical as it is with its
high Syrah
component. This is now one of Châteauneuf's leading domains and one can
expect the quality to improve even more in the future if past results are any
kind of guide.

Wines Lying in Barrel , Not available for delivery. Physiological ripeness has been skilfully achieved here by careful vineyard management and strict control over yields. The wine, as a result, is harmonious and elegantly textured with finely-grained tannins, a high quality of fruit and a real authority on the finish. Drink 2011-2016.

Wines Lying in Barrel , Not available for delivery. Most Exciting Wine of The Vintage Anything with Perdrix in the name tends to attract my attention and the wine itself proved very amenable, with a firm, elegant character - not as meaty as some Châteauneuf, and can argue the better ... Made from 70% Grenache, with the balance shared equally between Syrah and Mourvèdre, this is an exemplar of good Châteauneuf: fleshy, rich and generous of fruit and flavour, with plenty of grip and a potential to improve for up to five years. A very complete package from a domaine which ... MORE

"The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a dark ruby/purple color and a classic nose of creme de cassis intermixed with dusty soil notes as well as licorice, roasted herbs, and meaty notes. Deep and full-bodied, with ripe, but noticeable tannin and decent acidity, it should drink well for 12 ... MORE

The delightfully named Mourre Des Perdrix is one of Michel Maret’s four Châteauneuf -du -Pape cuvées, these particular partridges hiding out in a sandier soil than most, their lair in the centre to north of the Appellation. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieilles Vignes by Dom. de la Charbonnière was hugely successful (in every sense) in 2005, and the 2006 looks set to continue the trend. A massive wine, tightly-knit in its youth, but bursting with energy and a fantastic potential that will repay cellaring for a ... MORE Drink 2012-2020 .
