Pessac-Léognan

See Pessac-Léognan producers See a list of Pessac-Léognan wines

In 1986 a new communal district was created within Graves, based on the districts of Pessac and Léognan, the first of which lies within the suburbs of the city. Essentially this came about through pressure from Pessac-Léognan vignerons who wished to disassociate  themselves from growers with predominately sandy soils further south in Graves.

Pessac-Léognan has the best soils of the region, very similar to those of the Médoc, although the depth of gravel is more variable, and contains all the classed growths of the region.  Some of its great names, including Ch. Haut-Brion, even sit serenely and resolutely in Bordeaux's southern urban sprawl.

The climate is milder than to the north of the city and the harvest can occur up to two weeks earlier.  This gives the best wines a heady, rich and almost savoury character, laced with notes of tobacco, spice and leather.  Further south, the soil is sandier with more clay, and the wines are lighter, fruity and suitable for earlier drinking.

'Spellbinding' was how we described this wine when tasting the 2008 en primeur. Masses of juicy grapefruit dominates the nose whilst complex layers of lush guava notes even out towards ripe Galia melon on the palate. The scent of fresh vanilla binds this wine together whilst a refreshing lick of ... MORE

2006 and 2007 were really successful for this style of wine, and it provides a real alternative to better-touted dry whites such as Loire or Burgundy. Made from the classic Bordeaux white blend of Semillon and Sauvignon, it is very dry and mineral, so not quite so successful with sauced fish ... MORE

The exceptional quality of the 2006 vintage for dry white Bordeaux really shines through in this little gem; very refreshing and quite delicious.

I love this stylish Claret from what was a very successful vintage for Ch. Haut-Bailly. Refined, with supple, ripe cassis on the palate, fine tannins and excellent balancing acidity, Haut-Bailly's star is on the rise, and this is a wonderful chance to see what all the fuss is about at a very ... Ripe fruit and hints of tobacco hit the nose before you discover the palate has well-balanced acidity and silky tannins. There’s a good concentration a blackberries and earthiness with a slight hint of liquorice. As with the estate’s white, the finish goes on and on. This is one for the ... MORE

Made in an ethereal, lighter style than usual, the 2008 Les Carmes Haut-Brion offers up notes of menthol, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and sweet red and black currants. Medium-bodied, pure, delicate, and full of charm, it only lacks the texture and depth one expects in the best vintages like 2008. ... MORE

At a 10th of the price of its big brother Ch. Domaine de Chevalier always seems to know how to please. The 2008 has a fantastic, opulent nose of liquid blackcurrants and a concentrated, intense palate of dark cassis fruit but with that lovely freshness indicative of the vintage. This is a wine with plenty of flesh on its bones, but one ... MORE

From one of the most exciting and ever improving Bordeaux Château this is a rare gem. The magnificent Veronique Saunders told me that 5 years ago this wine would have qualified for her Grand Vin and this only just missed the grade which allows us to sample the beautifully feminine style of ... MORE
