Vinsobres, along with Beaumes-De -Venise, has cause for celebration, having, in 2006, been promoted to a stand alone appellation, in the vein of Gigondas or Vacqueyras, but now overtaking Cairanne , Rasteau and 12 or so other Cote du Rhone villages, in the local hierarchy. 

The reason? Primarily because the relative altitude of the vines has been recognised for lending complexity and structure to the wines. None are better at demonstrating this than the husband and wife team of Philippe and Valérie Chaume Arnaud.

A spicy, peppery nose of brambly fruit, highly perfumed with violets, leads to a perfectly balanced palate; not as concentrated as the 2007, perhaps, but very finely constructed nonetheless. Drink 2011-2015.

Grenache and Syrah take the lion’s share this year, with the late-ripening Mourvèdre more difficult in this cooler vintage. The characteristic aromatics of violet and crushed blackberry are supported by a pure minerality, balanced acidity and finely-etched fruit. Drink 2011-2015.
