The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the heart of New South Wales region is also known as Riverina and Griffith, and it has long been responsible for large amounts of inexpensive wine but it is now attracting investment from big wine companies.
The viticultural history of the region dates back to 1912 and to the arrival of John James McWilliam who participated in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme. The region yields approximately 55% of the production in New South Wales and 15% within Australia.
The high humidity late in the season favours the development of Botrytis (Noble Rot) and Botrytised Semillon is indeed the region's speciality, supplemented by Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
