2011 La Vieille Ferme Rouge, Côtes du Ventoux
La Vieille Ferme range is part of the Perrin diverse portfolio, along Château de Beaucastel (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and the other négoçiant label (Perrin et Fils) and, as known by shrewd consumers, it offers some of the best value quality wines in the region. Pierre Perrin applies the same top-class standards and philosophy, from organic agriculture to low yields and meticulous, fastidious winemaking, found at the family’s flagship estate Château de Beaucastel, and quality seems to rise with every year it passes.

2010 Vondeling Estate, Baldrick Estate, Paarl, South Africa
Vondeling’s aim here is to produce a soft, easy-drinking style without an excess of tannin, acidity or oak. The grapes are hand-sorted and de-stemmed, fermented in open-top tanks before going into barrel for malolactic fermentation and the wine is not over-extracted during this process. It then spends 11 months in barrel before bottling, but the wood is not new as this would impart too much tannin and oaky flavour which is emphatically not the desired style of this wine. The result is a wine which can be enjoyed immediately for its supple, dark fruit and gentle spicy character.

2011 La Closerie des Lys, Les Fruitières Vin de Pays d'Oc
An up-market yet wonderfully quaffable Vin de Pays from the Terrier/Collovray stable. A third each of Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino, the latter two adding aroma and freshness, the former weight and hints of tropical indulgence. A great effort from our good friends Jean Luc and David.

2010 Grüner Lössterrassen, Schloss Gobelsburg, Austria
Let’s break this name into its components parts. Gobelsburg is the name of the town in Austria’s Kamptal Valley where Schloss Gobelsburg is the producer. Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature grape variety and Loessterrassen describes the soil – a fine, wind-driven glacial deposit. Put it all back together for a delicious, spicy and refreshing wine.

2010 Scalabrone, Bolgheri Rosato, Guado al Tasso, Tuscany, Italy
A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 30% Syrah. The first thing you notice about this wine is its vibrant pink colour. The nose is a delight with an abundance of ripe red currant fruit, and it is soft and juicy on the palate too with lashings of summer fruit before a dry and satisfying finish.

2011 Massaya Rosé, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
This Lebanese rosé wine is made with a blend of Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from vines cultivated at altitudes between 900 and 1200 meters. On the nose there are notes of strawberry, raspberry and subtle spice. En bouche the wine is round but with a graceful streak of acidity which leads to a finish that is both crisp and clean. It would be a wonderful partner for smoked salmon, a goat’s cheese salad or as a summertime aperitif.

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, Trevisiol L. e Figli, Italy
The good thing about being a Prosecco snob, or aficionado if you prefer, is that the decent wines don't cost much more than the poor ones. With £10 in your hand you can buy a bottle of the...drier, citrus-like Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, Trevisiol.. which (is) very quaffable. (Tim Atkin - The Observer)

Franciacorta Satèn, Cantine Biondelli, Cazzago San Martino, Lombardy, Italy
The name 'Satèn' reflecting the satiny feel of this traditionally made, 100% Chardonnay sparkling wine, the produce of only the first, finest pressing that's been aged on its lees for 30 months prior to disgorgement. In fact it's the pretty, tight bead of bubbles that catches the eye and delights the palate; a gentle effect brought on by using less dosage/sugar to stimulate the second, carbonic fermentation; so there's less 'gas' too.

2004 Bollinger La Grande Année, Brut Champagne
La Grande Année is the ultimate expression of the Bollinger house style: rich and full - one of the world’s great Champagnes. The 2004 has surprisingly forward aromas of flowers, sherbet, toast and autolysis compete for attention on the delightful bouquet. There’s huge power on the dense, lush palate with notes of red apples, stone fruit and ripe figs which are balanced by some refreshingly crisp acidity, before the long, well-defined lingering mineral finish, rounds off this fantastic offering from Bollinger. Very tempting to drink now, but this will improve for another year or two and drink well through 2020 and beyond.

2008 Ch. de Fonbel, Grand Cru, St Emilion, Bordeaux
Sweet aromas of black cherries and smoky cassis herald a medium-bodied palate of excellent depth, ripe fruit and freshness. This is a deep, brooding wine that benefits from being decanted an hour or two before serving. Drinking now, but will develop further over the next five years.

2007 Ch. St Georges, Côte Pavie, St Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
To our mind, Ch. St Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2007 (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) provides the opportunity to purchase some cracking quality drinking Claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage. Plummy in character but with enough spice and complexity to make it more than just another drinking wine.

J. Milroy Cragganmore 21-Year-Old Scotch Whisky
John Milroy was one of the first retailers to pioneer Single Malt Whiskies in London over 40 years ago. This Scottish connoisseur’s devotion to promoting Malt Whiskies and his ability to identify special casks has created an international following for his John Milroy Selection. This single cask Malt brims with fruity character. The nose is remarkably fresh and fruity with apples and pear juice to the fore. A little hard oak tightens things nicely. The palate bursts with ripe fruit – more in the way of yellow fruit skins and a faint smoky edge balancing the exuberant building sweetness. The sweet fruitiness lingers long into the classy finish.

Aperol
The name says it all: Aperol is the perfect aperitif. Bright orange in colour, it has a unique taste, thanks to the secret recipe of infusions of selected ingredients including bitter and sweet oranges and many other herbs and roots in perfect proportions. It’s lovely on the rocks with a slice of orange (add a dash of water for a ‘softer’ drink), or mixed with Prosecco and soda for a delicious ‘spritzer’.
