This expression, despite relatively tender years, has a round and succulent aroma with citrus peel and shortbread showing. The palate is lively and clean, fattening with fruitiness, spice and chewy malt. The finish retains some juicy sweetness.

Dalmore distillery, located on the banks of the Cromarty Firth, was opened in 1839 by Alexander Matheson. The buildings look over the water to the fertile Black Isle and a nearby jetty, built by the US Navy when the distillery was appropriated during WWII is still referred to locally as the “Yankee Pier”. Distinguished with an immediate soda bread hit, some rum butter, glazed cherries and marzipan this malt packs punches beyond its years. The palate is sinewy and toasty, hugely malty, gristy and rich. The finish ebbs slowly with some liquorice and orange peel. MORE

The small, almost boutique, Arran distillery at Lochranza in the north of the island was opened as recently as 1995, yet the spirit already has the feel and complexity of some long established brands. Golden eagles soar on the thermals over Goat Fell which towers behind the distillery. Arran is often referred to as Scotland in miniature such is the variety of the landscape. Emerging aromas of apple pie, shortbread and citrus emerge. The elegant sweet palate has good substance building with mandarin and subtle floral notes. A fine nutty, spicy finish balances the sweetness. MORE

From the harbour town of the same name, Tobermory is the only distillery on the island of Mull. The nose is pleasantly plump, with some yellow fruit emerging in advance of mint and delicate peat-smoke. The palate offers light, buttery toast notes, finishing in a soft easy-going manner, as a little spice cuts in. MORE

The picturesque Linkwood distillery, founded in 1821, is one of Speyside's hidden gems. The Victorian buildings still stand despite much updating and expansion during the 1960s and 1970s. Crystal clear water fills the distillery dam and is used to cool the condensers. Fruit and floral aromas abound with peach skin and vanilla coming to the fore. The delicate, smoky palate has a balanced and complex feel, building to deliver nectarine and sugared almonds before a satisfying finish of sweet floral intensity MORE

Glenlossie, founded in 1876 by John Duff, lies just to the south of Elgin. The distillery was rebuilt following a fire in 1929 and was later expanded from 4 to 6 stills. Mannochmore distillery was erected nearby in 1971. The 11-year-old cask strength release gives beautifully clean floral fruity and spicy notes with an element redolent of hot-cross buns. The grassy, malty flavours are backed by a sinewy texture. A spicy dry finale makes this a very suitably aperitif. MORE

This is prepared for us by the enchanting Florence Castarede and surpasses its Hors D’Age status as the base age is 20 years compared to the standard of 15. The aromas are concentrated fruit and peppery spice and the palate is lively and juicy. Well composed and robust as good Armagnac should be. MORE
