Margaux had a tough time of things in 2007 so it is particularly rewarding to
find a wine like Du Tertre that has outperformed the vintage with such
concentration, personality and class. Their 59% Cabernet Sauvignon is the
highest proportion ever at Du Tertre and its lushness helped make this wine
such a success. A fragrant black fruit and eucalyptus nose leads on to a
refined but velvety palate with creamy, spicy, ripe blackberry fruit, dark
chocolate, melted tannins and a long, firm finish. Another impressive effort
from one of the rising stars of Bordeaux

A dollop of fresh blackcurrants and ripe black cherries announce this
consistently good value Pauillac. With a lovely, balancing streak of acidity
running throughout, Ch. Batailley is an harmonious and precise wine with
smooth, integrated tannins and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Owner Philippe
Castéja attributes this blend of ripeness and freshness to the unusual
length of time between flowering and harvest (140 days) in 2008; unique
conditions which allowed him to make, yet again, one of our favourite wines of
the vintage.

This has a well-defined nose of honey, white flowers and a touch of chalk dust
– not the usual “fat” Doisy-Vedrines bouquet. The palate is
medium-bodied, nice balance on the entry, good acidity, well-integrated oak,
lacking a little weight and depth on the finish, but showing a nice degree of
subtlety and grace.

Chateau Dubraud has been getting good reviews from Robert Parker from the 2000
vintage onwards (which goes to show that his sphere of influence is not just
confined to the rarefied level of the Cru Classés). From a lovely Right
Bank vintage, this is medium-bodied with bags of bright, fresh Merlot fruit -
perfect everyday claret. The sort of wine that one feels will aid the digestion
and make the day seem just that little bit brighter.

Another classic Graves blend from Jean-Michel Cazes, this time of Sauvignon
Blanc and Sémillon – and it’s elegant, aromatic and
irresistible! It has a fragrant grassy nose and a lively palate of fresh zingy
fruit followed by a rich, creamy lemon finish. This quintessential white
Bordeaux is utterly delicious as an aperitif or with fish, crustacea, poultry
and asparagus.

A terrific expression of Volnay which has benefitted from the inclusion of a
significant chunk of Premier Cru grapes (about a quarter of the total) in the
blend. Delicious clear red fruit dominates with violet overtones, fine tannins
and an attractive mineral finish.

One of the leading lights in the Pessac-Leognan appellation is Ch Carbonnieux,
run by the Perrin family. 20 years ago this estate was one of the first to
develop the concept of barrel fermentation, resulting in a resurgence of
popularity in dry White Bordeaux. Ch. Tour Leognan is the second label of that
property. This style of modern dry White Bordeaux displays striking aromas of
tropical and exotic fruit, brought about by fermenting the grapes in new oak
barrels. This makes this wine a brilliant aperitif or enables it to partner
full-flavoured fish dishes or goats cheese.

To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine
that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2007 provides the opportunity to purchase some
cracking quality drinking Claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage.
Plummy in character but with enough spice and complexity to make it more than
just another drinking wine, it will certainly grace the table of many a home.

The 2008 Ormes de Pez is one of the few successful wines from St Estèphe
this vintage. With a lovely, enticing nose, it is full of the dense, dark fruit
of the commune but with a creamy, raspberry twist to the finish. The tannins
are so ripe they are almost powdery on the palate – incredible
considering how linear and firm the majority of wines from this commune were
– and at this price, it’s an absolute bargain.

'Spellbinding' was how we described this wine when tasting the 2008 en primeur.
Masses of juicy grapefruit dominates the nose whilst complex layers of lush
guava notes even out towards ripe Galia melon on the palate. The scent of fresh
vanilla binds this wine together whilst a refreshing lick of acidity adds
harmonious balance, and the long length is truly mouthwatering.
We can't help but wonder - if this is how good it is when tasted young, how
good it will be next year when it is ready to drink? At this price, you can
afford to find out that answer for yourself.
