Welcome Berry Bros. & Rudd

Bordeaux 2005

'Extraordinary', 'legendary'  and 'best-ever' are some of the adjectives you will have seen used by the pundits to describe the 2005 vintage  when it was first tasted in barrel in Bordeaux in Spring 2006. Since then we have re-tasted many of the wines and we haven't changed our minds  - this is an astonishing vintage and some of the wines are the greatest we've had the privilege to drink.

If you haven't already indulged yourself with some of the wines from what, with time, could prove to be the greatest-ever Bordeaux vintage, or simply want to top up on purchases you have already made, then please do not hesitate as prices are likely to rise even further.

"Tasting the 2005 red wines from the bottle, many of them three or four times, confirmed that this is the greatest vintage produced during my 30-year career."
(Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2008)

Another bargain from St Estephe. Intense black fruits with lots of racy St Estephe minerality and class. Not something we have bought before En Primeur, but this is really playing way out of its league, and great to try something new. Lovely and decadent. Drink from 2010-2020.

This is another mouthwateringly good effort from Ch. Coutet. One of the classics of the region Coutet has once again provided a model of elegance and balance and style in 2005. Discreet and stylish, the fine pale colour and graceful, aromatic floral bouquet are supported by a beautifully harmonious palate of pure sweet citrus, peach and honeysuckle. As with the finest red wines of the vintage, the class really shows on the finish, which is intense, complex and exceptionally long. A wonderful Sauternes for the true connoisseur. Drink 2012-2025.

This shows plenty of dense, sweet fruit kept in check by healthy tannins. This is excellent value and provides an unmissable opportunity to enjoy the quality of this great vintage.

Potensac's 2005 is a firm, gutsy wine with elegant but very firm tannins and intense earthy flavours. The pure cassis and blackberry nose gives it considerable class, while the extra intensity and structure in 2005 makes it really rather good. Reminiscent of a top St Estèphe, this is classic Claret at a great price. Drink 2009-2016.

We are somewhat surprised and 100 % delighted at Monsieur Alain Vauthier's (The Owner of St Emilions greatest wine, Ch. Ausone) decision to release this brilliant Chateau En Primeur. When we tasted this, it was followed next by Chapelle de Ausone and then Ausone itself. Fonbel held its own like David to Goliath. It was brilliant and at this price a total bargain. Rich sweet, ripe blackberry fruit. Dense with soft tannins and glorious St Emilion soft appeal and Ausone majesty. Drink from arrival in 2008 to 2015. BBR Score 16.5/20

D'Yquem still seems to be head and shoulders above everyone else in Sauternes but Rieussec is part of the select group - made up of Climens and Suduiraut - chasing for the second spot. This is better than 2003 but a little bit behind 2001 in terms of gravitas and zingy acidity. It is nonetheless a cracking wine with immense class, intensity and elegance plus firm acidity that provides a backbone for the rich fruit. Made from 91% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle, it combines purity with great balance., while very pure, rich apricots with hints of fruit peel abound. Drink 2010-2030.

The Jean-Michel Cazes estates have had a great year in 2005, and this one is no different. This is benchmark St Estèphe, with lots of earthy minerality, this has far more generosity than usual. Extremely accessible, the spicy nose with notes of licorice and pepper leads on to a rich balanced palate with lashings of sweet loganberries and cassis with tobacco hints. This is at once classy, concentrated and quaffable, but with great ageing potential too. Drinking 2012-2020.

5Under the ownership of AXA Millésimes, run by Englishman Christian Seely, this 16th century estate has really fulfilled its potential, firmly establishing itself amongst the top three or four in the region. Its 2005 demonstrates the stylishness of the vintage with its finely perfumed nose, while the palate combines elegance with an undeniable weight of exotic tropical citrus and white peach fruit. This is a brilliantly harmonious, complete wine with a sublime aftertaste. Drink 2012-2025

Proud and hard-working owner Gonzague Lurton appreciated fully this vintage, the perfect conditions meaning the winemaker's involvement was minimal and the wine's classic terroir, in the heart of the appellation, and sheer class come to the fore. The 2005 is very fresh and shows all the Margaux hallmarks of elegance and finesse with beautifully pure fruit and utterly natural with judicious use of oak.  This is almost certainly the best Ch. Durfort Vivens in recent years, and in 2005 it certainly lives up to its deuxième Cru status. Exceptional value for the quality of the wine. Drink 2014-2025.

The Bordelais do a nice line in beautiful chateaux, and overlooking the river Gironde, Phélan Ségur's is one of the best examples. It is firm with concentrated blackcurrant and minerally fruit and is surprisingly substantial - much more so than the very enjoyable 2004. It is pure Phélan-Ségur and classic St Estèphe, but with an extra turbo boost from the 2005 vintage. If this is well priced it will turn out to be one of the cleverest buys of the vintage. Certainly it is the best Phélan of the modern era.
