Margaux had a tough time of things in 2007 so it is particularly rewarding to
find a wine like Du Tertre that has outperformed the vintage with such
concentration, personality and class. Their 59% Cabernet Sauvignon is the
highest proportion ever at Du Tertre and its lushness helped make this wine
such a success. A fragrant black fruit and eucalyptus nose leads on to a
refined but velvety palate with creamy, spicy, ripe blackberry fruit, dark
chocolate, melted tannins and a long, firm finish. Another impressive effort
from one of the rising stars of Bordeaux

To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine
that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2007 provides the opportunity to purchase some
cracking quality drinking Claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage.
Plummy in character but with enough spice and complexity to make it more than
just another drinking wine, it will certainly grace the table of many a home.

Another excellent value Pomerol from Decanter Man of the Year, Christian
Moueix. Like his whole range, Lafleur Gazin provides compelling evidence of the
success of Pomerol in 2007, combining fleshiness and minerality with finely
textured, ripe tannins. Unlike so many wines in 2007 it is pleasingly plump in
the middle too. Well-situated between the two châteaux that make up its name,
Lafleur and Gazin, the wine is made from a typical Pomerol mix of 80% Merlot
and 20 Cabernet Franc. A restrained but rich focused nose of fresh plums,
blackberry and chocolate is followed by a soft and stylish fruity palate with
notes of pepper and a ripe, warm dark fruit finish.

Run by the delightful livewire that is Claire Villars, this underrated estate
continues its climb up the Pauillac hit parade in 2007. With a hefty 90%
Cabernet Sauvignon and only 10% Merlot, this is gorgeously feminine, almost
Margaux-esque. Its pure, cassis nose, and elegant blackberry, chocolate and
cedar flavours are supported by attractive but firm tannins. Well-integrated,
pretty, refined and approachable, this is as full of personality as Claire's
bright orange winery (her favourite colour). With refreshing honesty, she
compares this to her 1999 although we think it is rather better than that. A
delightful 2007 Pauillac.

This was a revelation to us as the usually good but not exceptional Caillou
Blanc was breathtaking this year. Racey concentration, depth, premier cru
Burgundy level of sophistication.Really good. Sadly tiny production so we
haven't been able to buy very many cases. My tasting note actually reads "Woof
!Woof!" Must be good!

With more than a hint of the Godfather about him, owner Jean-Hubert Delon is a
man of extremely high standards but he is rightly pleased with this outstanding
Clos du Marquis. Easily of Classed Growth quality, its pure, crunchy
blackcurrant and dark chocolate nose is followed by an elegant, minerally
blackberry and coffee palate with finely textured tannins and a rich, polished
finish. Made with more Cabernet Sauvignon than last year (58%) this is very
close to the magnificent 2006 and as good as the 2005, which is not something
you can say of many wines this year. Excellent value.

Despite the most difficult vintage in the last 10 years according to Henri
Lurton, Brane-Cantenac have produced a highly attractive, feminine,
early-drinking Margaux in 2007. With more Cabernet Sauvignon (53%) than usual
in the blend, only a minuscule 25% of the crop made it into the Grand Vin,
showing the sacrifice required to succeed in this tricky year. An attractive
nose of ripe strawberries and chocolate leads on to a sophisticated raspberry
and cream palate with a lovely racy, fruit-driven finish. With a finesse
reminiscent of top Burgundy, this classic, well-crafted Margaux is as good
value as ever.

Sandwiched happily between First Growths, Lafite and Mouton, this is Ch.
d'Armailhac's more structured, serious big brother. We actually had trouble
splitting them in 2007, although for us Clerc Milon still shades it, with its
rich, brooding kirsch nose and weighty, fresh, dark damson and spice palate. It
has excellent generosity for any vintage, let alone 2007, with dense yet ripe
tannins and good grip. With 42% Merlot in the blend, this is one of the few
really good Left Bank wines using such a high proportion of that variety.
Impressive, traditional Pauillac in the best sense of the word.

Ripe fruit and hints of tobacco hit the nose before you discover the palate
has well-balanced acidity and silky tannins. Theres a good concentration a
blackberries and earthiness with a slight hint of liquorice. As with the
estates white, the finish goes on and on. This is one for the traditional
Bordeaux lover.

Ch. Branaire Ducru - Master of St. Julien. The wine of choice for the Bordeaux
cognoscenti, Patrick Maroteau's stunning wine is close to the quality of the
First Growths in 2007. With the same (albeit much riper) tannins as the 1996,
Patrick ranks this as the 5th or 6th best Branaire of the last 15 years. The
rich, fresh, almost porty nose of spicy damsons and blackberries simply oozes
class while the precise, creamy cassis palate is as sleek and balanced as
anything we have tasted. Fine grained tannins add structure while a long, pure
black fruit, coffee and bitter chocolate finish is the icing on the cake.
