Burgundy 2011 En Primeur

In 2011, Burgundy wine producers are happy once again with the quality of what they have made but not with the amount of wine in their cellars.

Never before have Burgundy wines been so popular around the world. With a succession of short crops, especially for red wines, there is starting to be real pressure on availability and pricing. Fortunately the slight strengthening of the pound against the euro has negated almost all of the price increases from the growers, so pricing in sterling is largely stable.

Careful vignerons who judged their picking dates intelligently have produced a healthy crop of delicious wines with some flesh on the palate and good acidity, very nicely balanced for medium term ageing. They have the fresh aspect of 2007 but a little more weight.

Though the growing season may have been similar to 2007, the wines are quite different because the grapes had much thicker skins, offering greater density of fruit and more structure.
