Bordeaux First Growths
The 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines grouped the Gironde châteaux into 5 different classes (crus classes) or growths. The Premier Crus Classés (First Growths) of Margaux, Latour, Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Haut-Brion from Médoc, along with Sauternes' Premier Cru Supérieur D’Yquem are considered as the blue-chip stocks of the Bordeaux wine world.
In recent years certain estates from St.-Emilion and Pomerol have successfully challenged the traditional supremacy of the right bank châteaux: Without question, such estates as Ausone, Cheval Blanc (St Emilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés "A" ), Pétrus and Le Pin (Pomerol) are today making top-class, highly acclaimed wines and they are among the most collectible labels from Bordeaux.
