Ch. d'Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet white wine in the world;
quite a reputation to live up to in a difficult vintage for sweet wines. The
2006 was luscious and rich with lovely tarte aux pommes flavours, sweet
pineapple and citrus fruit of great purity. It was well-balanced with beautiful
freshness and incredible concentration but perhaps lacking the depth and
complexity of better vintages. This will be an early-drinking Yquem with its
beautifully pure fruit overriding the botrytis characteristics. It is still the
Sauternes of the vintage, but this says more about the quality of 2006
Sauternes than it does about d'Yquem.

According to the team at d'Yquem, the 2007 vintage reminded them of a
combination of 1997, the legendary 1967 and the stylish 1988. The wealth of
flavour on the palate is seamless and completely mouthfilling without yet
showing the glorious detail to come, while the finish is sensationally long.
This has lived up to every expectation in 2007 and will surely be considered as
one of the truly great d'Yquems of all time.
While not as majestic as the ethereal 2001 it's going to give it a run for its
money! ... and it's a lot of money make no mistake. The '07 is expensive but we
feel honour bound to offer it as this is one of the greatest wines in the
world.

Only 39% of production was used for the Grand Vin and with a whopping 90.5%
Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend the 2004 Lafite needs little introduction. This
wine has one of the most exciting noses - intense, spicy, pure cassis and a
generous helping of creamy vanilla. The palate is just as exciting, exhibiting
terrific concentration and a hint of warm new oak which leads to an intense,
linear core of lively blackcurrants and layers of intriguing minerality. The
Cabernet was very evident on the finish with the variety's characteristically
firm tannins taking over at the end, making this one for the long-term.

"In contrast to the 1993's penetrating, upfront aromas, the 1994 is closed aromatically. With coaxing, some truffle-like, sweet, black fruit aromas, as well as those of mineral/stones come forward. This spicy, full-bodied, powerful wine is a more masculine, structured effort than the 1993, with a potentially more complex, richer character. It is superbly crafted, beautifully balanced, and as pure as a wine can be. The integration of new oak, acidity, and tannin is commendable. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025". (Clive Coates)

Ch. d'Yquem reported 2003 as the hottest year since 1896, the previous hottest
being the 1976 which provided a superb wine with excellent botrytis which is
now showing at its best. Ch. d'Yquem conclude their report: "This unusual
vintage will no doubt remain a benchmark for many years to come. An
extraordinary summer, "total" botrytis, and the sacrifice of part of
the estate made it possible to harvest grapes with optimum fruit and and
concentration thanks to unusually clean botrtization."

No wine in Bordeaux is more silky and gorgeously textured than Ch. Lafite.
Happily, their 2007 continues the trend. A rich, fine, dark fruit compote nose
leads to a wonderfully fresh, refined palate with delicate yet intense cassis,
plum and cedar-box flavours caressing the tastebuds on their way to an
exquisite finish. Lafite have not tried to produce a blockbuster in 2007 but
have worked in perfect harmony with the vintage. Using low yields and allowing
only 38% of the crop into the Grand Vin, they have wholeheartedly succeeded in
producing a beautifully classic 2007 Lafite.

This outstanding Haut-Brion may not have the opulence of Mouton or the sheer
class of Latour but its power, breeding and structure arguably make it the most
complete First Growth in 2007. It is a Cabernet-dominated Haut-Brion with 44%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc alongside 43% Merlot. A majestic nose
with bitter chocolate hints is followed by a palate of immense power (for 2007)
with gloriously rich, sweet black fruit, minerals, tobacco and mocha and big
but velvety tannins. With perfect balance, weight and poise, Haut-Brion is in
another dimension to almost every other 2007 we have tasted. Bravo.

Winemaker/administrator Jean Delmas considers this to be his best wine since
2000. Only 55% of the production - a blend of 61% Merlot, 20% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc - has gone into the hedonistic Grand Vin.
Enticing aromas of ripe, spicy plums and raisins with nuances of tobacco,
minerals and vanilla entice you to take a sip. It is completely delicious, with
notes of Swiss chocolate, sweet fruit, toast and cinnamon spice and fine
tannins. An exceptionally pure, round and extremely polished wine. Drink
2015-2030.

"This may be the finest Cheval Blanc since the monumental 2000.... .A deep
ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic Cheval perfume of menthol, red as
well as black currants, smoke, oranges, and black tea. It possesses beautiful
sweetness and purity, medium body, extraordinary elegance, and potential
complexity. While not a blockbuster in the style of the 2000 and 1998, it is a
precise, fragrant, potentially top-flight effort as well as one of the finest
wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022." 93-95/100

"Haut Brion 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September 2003), possesses an umistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity , firm tannin and an angular, structured finish. it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-20020+." 94/100 pts.
