Rhône 2011 En Primeur

2011 has yielded  a larger, more normal harvest and a set of wines which will not fail to please. In point of fact they are closer in style to 2006 than 2008, having more energy and equilibrium than the latter. Stéphane Ogier describes the vintage as ‘gourmande’, ‘digeste’ and ‘séduisant’. The aphoristic René Rostaing describes 2011 as a vintage not of ‘matière’ but of ‘terroir’. Less is more. Rostaing abhors the facile dissection of  Côte-Rôtie into Brune and Blonde, which for all its commercial guile does not begin to unearth, for want of a better word, the multiplicity of soil types and vinous potential. Only in a year such as this can these differences begin to be understood.

This is the perfect antidote to those who fear that the increase of global temperatures will send alcohol levels in these naturally rich Mediterranean wines off the radar, and out of our affections, for ever. Not so in a year such as this.

The wines score share more modest alcohol levels and less austere tannins than years such as 2009 and 2007. They will provide excellent mid-term drinking opportunities and will be selected for their food-matching and for their sheer ‘buvabilité’. It must be emphasised that the pricing stability proves once again that you get much more for less in the Rhône Valley, as is proved very neatly by the growing international popularity of its wines.
