White Wine as Good for the Heart as Red? - 24/08/2006
When it comes to the beneficial properties of wine, the heart knows no
colour!
A new study published on the 23/08 issue of the ACS Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry, challenges the notion that red wine is more heart-healthy than white wine.
Past studies indicated that the cardioprotective compounds in grapes, ";polyphenolic antioxidants";, reside in the skin and seeds. Grape skins are crushed with the pulp to make red wines. However in the white wine-making, the skins are separated from the pulp. That situation led to the conventional belief that red wines are the most heart healthy.
Researchers agreed that more detailed study is necessary to identify the ingredients responsible for the cardioprotective abilities of the grape flesh. The breakthrough created from the current study is the evidence, for the first time, that the flesh of grapes is equally beneficial for the heart as the skins.
The current study was conducted with scientists from the United States in co-operation with the University of Milan and several other institutes in Italy.
