French Harvest Begins

The first grapes of the 2008 harvest in France were picked on 14th August in the Southern French region of Roussillon, a week earlier than last year.

The Conseil Interprofessionel des Vins du Roussillon (CIVR) confirmed that a Rivesaltes producer was the first to begin picking white Muscat à Petits Grains grapes for its Vin de Pays wines.

The French harvest tends to begin shortly after 20 August and continues through September, right into November in some areas. Viniflhor, the national agricultural body, estimates the total 2008 harvest volume will be 45.8m hectolitres, just under the 46.5m hectolitres harvested in 2007.
