Southern Rhône lovers have plenty of reasons to rejoice these days, with the region enjoying a string of excellent vintages and a growing number of top-notch, well-priced domaines from which to choose…and Perrin & Fils is one of the best ambassadors.
The “Perrin & Fils” label is used for fantastically value-priced but quality-oriented wines made in various Rhône appellations by the Perrin family. With these wines, the ambitious Pierre Perrin showcases the notion that the Southern Rhône is a complex mosaic of unique terroirs, not just one large vineyard producing homogeneous Côtes du Rhône reds.
Pierre applies the same top-class standards and philosophy, from organic agriculture to low yields and meticulous, fastidious winemaking, found at the family’s flagship estate Château de Beaucastel, in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and quality seem to rise with every year it passes.
The range includes:
- The single-vineyard bottlings of Rasteau, Vinsobres and Cairanne; all are terrific examples of the rough-diamonds that area produces. These villages are among the 16 communes permitted to include their names in the Côtes du Rhône-Villages appellation, and hence rank just below the crus, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
- A real blockbuster, the 2007 Vacqueyras Cristins, from an outstanding terroir for Grenache.
- A Gigondas (70% Grenache) of Burgundian elegance (La Gille).
- And an expressive Chateauneuf du Pape, Les Sinards made from young vines off the Beaucastel estate and some other vineyards in the nearby area “Les Olivets”

We love the wines from this village which is a little more sheltered than Gigondas. They are generally generous of fruit with a rounded, almost velvety texture. Truffles, raspberries and the faintest of autumnal whispers combine in this rich and silky Cairanne. Decanter Score: 16/20 | ||||
