A remarkably full-bodied and fruit expressive Cabernet Sauvignon, with masses of ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, ably supported by spicy French oak notes. The fine, ripe tannins make this a very age-worthy wine.

It is really interesting to find a parcel of slightly more mature Syrah from the New World and this example from the Casablanca Valley is quite fascinating. The black cherry fruit is complemented by notes of wood smoke and bacon fat and the tannins are supple and refined. It is an elegant wine with a long length.

This wine has an intriguing, fresh nose of green limes with an interesting vegetal note of artichoke coming through alongside ripe lemon and a lifted note of peach blossom. The palate has weight and intensity. It is full of rich lemon citrus fruit alongside nectarine, white peach and a touch of tangerine peel, while a waxy, toasty note comes through from the Semillon. This is an unusual, complex, full bodied wine, one that deserves contemplation.

An intriguing single vineyard (Barovo) wine from the southern slopes of the highlands of the FYR of Macedonia. This full-bodied, black fruit laden wine with hints of oak and an almost Italianesque herbal note can easily deal with anything a summer barbecue would throw at it.
The intrinsic freshness of the local Vranec grape helps balance the alcohol of its blending partner, Tribadeg, which is more universally known as Zinfandel! The grapes are picked early in the morning to preserve this freshness and then transported to the modern winery in the outskirts of the capital Skopje. Tikves are the country’s largest producer of wine and spirits, they lavish a great deal of care on these single vineyard wines that they believe are the best expression of Macedonia’s long viticultural heritage Martin Hudson MW, Wine Buyer

We have been buying from David Moreau since his first vintage in 2009 and are delighted to have found such a class act at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. There were little bits of hail in 2012 here but nothing very serious compared to other appellations. David chose to harvest relatively late, around 27th September, with yields between 18 and 33 hl/ha.

An elegant and refined Syrah, as one would expect from a concert pianist turned winemaker. The ripe bramble fruit and hints of pepper spice are complimented by subtle oak overtones. A great example of what the new Old World is doing.

The 2014 Laissez Faire Fiano from Frankland River is a wonderful interpretation of an Italian classic. Ripe lemon and lime citrus fruit combine with the smoky note of a fine Fiano d’Avellino with good weight and a waxy texture, almost reminiscent of Semillon. Don’t be fooled though, this is not a heavy, rich style of Fiano, it is utterly refreshing, mineral and pure with a grapefruit bitterness running through the back of the palate and a delicate touch of almond on the long finish. This is a superb wine with impressive precision, and it is utterly delicious.
Larry Cherubino is something of a star in Western Australian winemaking. With an impressive portfolio behind him, he set up his own range of wines in 2005, focusing particularly on fruit sourced from the Great Southern and its sub-regions of Porongurup and Frankland River. Laissez Faire is his label dedicated to natural wines, made from grapes from vineyards with low density plantings or dry-grown bush vines and created to express a true sense of place. The finer wines from Chile are getting seriously good. One of the key members of Chile’s new wave, the De Martinos were also among the first to explore the potential of the neglected stock of old Carignan vines in the traditional winemaking area of the Maule Valley. Dense, multilayered, spicy, rich and chewy, the results, in a wine such as De Martino Vigno 2012 have a Mediterranean feel to them, with earthy and herbal tones.
