Domaine Mouton


Jean Claude Mouton is a worthy representative of the new generation in the northern Rhône; who, despite the lofty location of his winery, high above the mighty river, is still on an upward trajectory in terms of reputation.

He is fortunate, in this respect, in having two perfectly located vineyards in the steep granitic slopes of Côte Chatillon in Condrieu and the schistous terraces of the Côte Blonde above Ampuis in Côte-Rôtie; he makes benchmark wines in each appellation.

Generous barrel maturation in both cases allows the famous terroir a full and harmonious expression.

Côte Châtillon is one of the most celebrated lieux-dits in Condrieu. Its wines combine a classically rich and generous texture with a fine seam of minerality, which adds linearity and focus to an already concentrated structure. Drink 2010-2014.

This wine displays the classic red and black fruits of Syrah, with a whiff of woodsmoke and a dash of tapenade, which mingle beautifully with the floral aromatics and feminine charm coming from the addition of Viognier to the blend. Drink 2012-2016.

The fruit for this Côte-Rôtie is sourced from sites at the southern end of the appellation. The wine has wonderful smoky bacon and violet aromas followed by a palate dominated by cherries and plums with supple, satisfying tannins.

This is a rich and ripe Condrieu, with a generous honeyed, creamy texture and a surprisingly firm and linear acidity. Jean Claude advocates trying this with foie gras and is sure that it will improve over three to four years.
