Domaine Spiropoulos
Continuing a long family wine-making history that dates back to the 1860's,
Nondas Spiropoulos founded the domaine in a state-of-the-art winery, located
near the ancient Manitinia in Peloponnese. The estate now features over 50
hectares planted with the indigenous cultivars Moschofílero (white), Mavroúdi,
Agiorgítiko and Lagórthi (reds) as well as Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay and
Sauvignon Blanc.
Domaine Spiropolulos is a pioneer in organic farming in Greece. The domaine pursues a distinct stylistic orientation towards dry wines of rich aroma and fruit extraction. Nondas' son Apostolos, a graduate from the University of California at Davis with a doctorate in oenology, has brought on board additional sophistication and contemporary orientation in the winemaking.
While Spyropoulos has been associated with white wines, from the Mantinía appellation, the results of experimentation with the hallmark red variety of the region (Agiorgitiko - aka St.George's grape) on high altitude vineyards (600m) have yielded excellent results. The grape produces a stylish, polished wine of abundant plumy fruitiness and suave texture.
