The Heggies Vineyard Estate

The Heggies Vineyard Estate

The Heggies Vineyard, now one of the most prestigious single vineyards in Eden Valley and possibly Australia, had been grazing land for most of its history and was owned by local bushman, Colin Heggie (his face featured in a drawing on the wine labels), before being purchased by his long-time friend Wyndham Hill Smith, then Manager of the Yalumba Wine Company.

Planting began in 1971 and the first wine was released in 1979. At 550 metres above sea level, Heggies is one of Australia's highest altitude vineyards and also one of its coolest. In such a unique vineyard, each grape variety needs its own specialised viticultural programme of care according to its position within the vineyard. This philosophy results in some of the best fruit in Eden Valley which captures the flavour and balance of the grapes in their purest essence.

Heggies's winemaker, Peter Gambetta brings onboard rich winemaking experience from his years in the premium wine-growing regions of Coonawarra, Barossa and Eden Valleys,  and he is aided by Darell Kruger, the vineyard viticulturist.

Chardonnay is the flagship Heggies wine, and it bears the stamp of this exceptional vineyard. The wine is derived from Burgundian Chardonnay clones grown in an extremely low-yielding viticultural environment, naturally fermented by the use of indigenous yeasts, and receiving partial malolactic fermentation, all of which adds to the individuality of the wine and its potential to further age gracefully in the bottle. The `Reserve' Chardonnay wine is a blend of the best barrels from the best hand-picked Chardonnay fruit in the single Estate of Heggies Vineyard.
