Dallas Dhu Distillery

Dallas Dhu Distillery

The original meaning of the name Dallas Dhu (pronounced Dai leas dubh) means Field by the Black Water fall or Black Water Valley. In it's time the output from the warehouses contributed to the blends of Roderick Dhu and Benmore.

The construction of the distillery was commissioned by blender Wright & Greig, in 1898, with designs by the architect Charles Doig, who is considered by many as the inventor of the pagoda-roof concept. The distillery was extended in the 1950's and 1960's. Electricity did not reach Dallas Dhu until the 1950's and the water wheel still contributed to the power pool into the 1970's.

Dallas Dhu was closed by the Distillers Company Limited in 1983. Dallas Dhu has been operated as a non working distillery museum since 1988. The single malt used to enter in the composition of the blend called Roderick Dhu. There are no plans to restart production, but rare batches appear in independent bottlings. The style of the malt is soft, with sweet overtones of honey, candied organges and bitter chocolate. It makes a great after dinner dram.
