Bodegas Estancia Piedra
Estancia
Piedra was founded by Grant Stein, a Scottish lawyer and a keen wine
enthusiast, in Guareña Valley, 10 km south of the ancient town of
Toro, in the heart of Old Castile. Since its foundation in 1998,
Estancia Piedra has won critical acclaim for its wines and is regarded as one
of the leading bodegas in the modern era of the D.O. Toro.
Estancia Piedra means ‘stone estate’, a reflection perhaps of the wonderful brightly coloured limestone soils here which produce wines of purity and real intensity.
Estancia Piedra owns some 59 ha of mostly Tinta de Toro vines (a clone of Tempranillo) of 40 years old average age, although some of the vines in the single vineyard site “Paredinas” are of 100 years or more. The local grape variety, Tinta de Toro, is well-adapted to thrive under the dry, continental climate of the D.O. Toro.
The Azul label (Spanish for blue) was first produced in 2005. Made from 100% Tinta de Toro grapes and hand-harvested from 40-year old vines, it is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in bottle and sees no oak, in order to allow for a pure expression of the intense fruit flavours.
