Islander Estate Vineyard
Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia, is the country’s third largest island, and the this winery is located in the heart of it on the gentle, rolling slopes of Kohinor Hills. The island is regarded as a wilderness of great natural beauty, inhabited by only 4,400 people, and the source of some of Australia’s finest gourmet foods.
Flying winemaker Jacques Lurton first conceived of the idea of planting vines here when he spent his honeymoon on the island with his wife Francoise. He set up an 11-hectare site, built a winery in the modern Australian style but with all the material shipped in from France, and planted an eclectic range of grape varieties.
The particular appeal of this site for Bordeaux-trained Jacques is its relative coolness, allowing for slow ripening of the grapes resulting in wines of finesse and elegance rather than the blockbuster power for which Australian Shiraz is usually better known.
