Château Haut-Brion

Haut-Brion is located in the bustling suburb of Pessac on the outskirts of Bordeaux. This 45 hectare 1st Growth property was the only property outside of the Médoc and Sauternes to be included in the 1855 Classification.

Haut Brion's vineyards (Red: Cabernet Sauvignon 45%; Merlot 37%; Cabernet Franc 18%; White: Sémillon 63%; Sauvignon Blanc 37%) lie on large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel banks interspersed with clay. Vinification includes approx. 22 months' wood ageing, 100% new oak.

Jean-Bernard Delmas, one of Bordeaux`s great characters, was régisseur at Haut Brion from 1961 to 2004, his son, Jean-Philippe Delmas is now Directeur d'Exploitation and runs the property with the Managing Director, Prince Robert of Luxembourg. The entire Haut Brion portfolio, including La Mission Haut Brion and La Tour Haut Brion is overseen by this capable duo, under the watchful eye of President Directeur Generale, Duchesse de Mouchy.

Haut-Brion is characterised by its seductive perfume, harmony and elegance and its ability to age with grace and dignity. A superb white is also produced.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, For laying down, 13% alc.

Made from almost equal parts Merlot (34%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%) and Cabernet Franc (30%) this rich, stylish Second wine of Haut Brion has considerably more Cabernet than in 2005 and as a result boasts more structure and finesse than usual. It is generous and seductive with sweet, very concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit and earthy minerality, supported by substantial but very well-integrated tannins. This is a lively, masculine wine bursting with energy and a restrained sexiness. Very impressive indeed. MORE

As usual, the 2005 Bahans-Haut-Brion mirrors its bigger brother, but is softer with more forward fruit as well as lighter tannin. Its aromas and flavors are similar to those of Haut-Brion. It should last a lot longer than its forwardness would suggest (the 1989 is still drinking beautifully), drinking well for 15 or more years. MORE

"In contrast to the 1993's penetrating, upfront aromas, the 1994 is closed aromatically. With coaxing, some truffle-like, sweet, black fruit aromas, as well as those of mineral/stones come forward. This spicy, full-bodied, powerful wine is a more masculine, structured effort than the 1993, with a potentially more complex, richer character. It is superbly crafted, beautifully balanced, and as pure as a wine can be. The integration of new oak, acidity, and tannin is commendable. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025". (Clive Coates) MORE

This outstanding Haut-Brion may not have the opulence of Mouton or the sheer class of Latour but its power, breeding and structure arguably make it the most complete First Growth in 2007. It is a Cabernet-dominated Haut-Brion with 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc alongside 43% Merlot. A majestic nose with bitter chocolate hints is followed by a palate of immense power (for 2007) with gloriously rich, sweet black fruit, minerals, tobacco and mocha and big but velvety tannins. With perfect balance, weight and poise, Haut-Brion is in another dimension to almost every other 2007 we have tasted. Bravo.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, For laying down, 12.5% alc.

Winemaker/administrator Jean Delmas considers this to be his best wine since 2000. Only 55% of the production - a blend of 61% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc - has gone into the hedonistic Grand Vin. Enticing aromas of ripe, spicy plums and raisins with nuances of tobacco, minerals and vanilla entice you to take a sip. It is completely delicious, with notes of Swiss chocolate, sweet fruit, toast and cinnamon spice and fine tannins. An exceptionally pure, round and extremely polished wine. Drink 2015-2030.

Haut-Brion’s 2001 possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones.

Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, Ready, but will keep,

"Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025."

The connoisseurs’ first growth, and notably the one with the smallest production.  The 1996 is a completely different wine to the slightly brutish 1995.  This has an ethereal lightness to it.  Approachable now though with many, many years ahead.

This 1996 Haut-Brion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc. It has a dark ruby colour, concentrated yet supple fruit and a tannin level equal to his Médoc First-growth compatriots. The fine balance of this ever-perfect wine will make it approachable within the next five years and will last another 30. MORE

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, For laying down, 12.5% alc.

"The 2003 Haut-Brion reveals the vintage’s opulence and low acidity, but it possesses an even higher tannin level than the 2000. A deep ruby/purple color accompanies classic aromas of cranberries, scorched earth, minerals, and blue as well as black fruit notes. It hits the palate with considerable richness and intensity, but is neither overripe nor heavy. Cropped at low yields of 36 hectoliters per hectare, it has a good inner core of depth as well as sweetness... Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025."
