Welcome Berry Bros. & Rudd

Chateau Haut-Brion

Haut-Brion is located in the bustling suburb of Pessac on the outskirts of Bordeaux. This 45 hectare 1st Growth property was the only property outside of the Médoc and Sauternes to be included in the 1855 Classification.

Haut Brion's vineyards (Red: Cabernet Sauvignon 45%; Merlot 37%; Cabernet Franc 18%; White: Sémillon 63%; Sauvignon Blanc 37%) lie on large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel banks interspersed with clay. Vinification includes approx. 22 months' wood ageing, 100% new oak.

Jean-Bernard Delmas, one of Bordeaux`s great characters, was régisseur at Haut Brion from 1961 to 2004, his son, Jean-Philippe Delmas is now Directeur d'Exploitation and runs the property with the Managing Director, Prince Robert of Luxembourg. The entire Haut Brion portfolio, including La Mission Haut Brion and La Tour Haut Brion is overseen by this capable duo, under the watchful eye of President Directeur Generale, Duchesse de Mouchy.

Haut-Brion is characterised by its seductive perfume, harmony and elegance and its ability to age with grace and dignity. A superb white is also produced.

Made from almost equal parts Merlot (34%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%) and Cabernet Franc (30%) this rich, stylish Second wine of Haut Brion has considerably more Cabernet than in 2005 and as a result boasts more structure and finesse than usual. It is generous and seductive with sweet, very concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit and earthy minerality, supported by substantial but very well-integrated tannins. This is a lively, masculine wine bursting with energy and a restrained sexiness. Very impressive indeed. Drink: 2010-2020.

This outstanding Haut-Brion may not have the opulence of Mouton or the sheer class of Latour but its power, breeding and structure arguably make it the most complete First Growth in 2007. It is a Cabernet-dominated Haut-Brion with 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc alongside 43% Merlot. A majestic nose with bitter chocolate hints is followed by a palate of immense power (for 2007) with gloriously rich, sweet black fruit, minerals, tobacco and mocha and big but velvety tannins. With perfect balance, weight and poise, Haut-Brion is in another dimension to almost every other 2007 we have tasted. Bravo.

"Haut Brion 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September 2003), possesses an umistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity , firm tannin and an angular, structured finish. it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-20020+."

Thoroughbred Wine of the Week
"Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025."

Manager Jean-Philippe Delmas (Jean Delmas' son) has every right to be enormously proud of his wines this year, not least his jewel in the crown, First Growth Ch. Haut-Brion. The 2006 is as powerful and masculine as ever, a taut, brooding mass of seriously intense ripe plum, strawberry and damson fruit packed with earthy minerality and spice. The nose is rich and chocolatey, while the huge tannins on the palate suggest that this is one to lay down to enjoy in your dotage. Made from 57% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc this is a very serious, very impressive and very intense Ch. Haut-Brion

This 1996 Haut-Brion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc. It has a dark ruby colour, concentrated yet supple fruit and a tannin level equal to his Médoc First-growth compatriots. The fine balance of this ever-perfect wine will make it approachable within the next five years and will last another 30.

"....The1996 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a surprisingly tight bouquet. With aeration, notes of fresh tobacco, dried herbs, smoke, asphalt, and black fruits emerge ... but reluctantly. It is tannic and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity and a layered, multidimensional style. However, the finish contains abundant tannin, suggesting that this wine needs 5-8 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." 92/100 points. (Robert  Parker - Wine Advocate)
