Xoriguer
Xoriguer pronounced sho-ri-gair) is
a unique tasting Mediterranean Gin from Mahón, Menorca. It is distilled from
wine alcohol rather than the more commonly used grain alcohol and its flavour
is infused with fresh juniper berries and herbs. Originally created for 18th
Century British sailors and soldiers stationed on the island, it is still
distilled by the Pons family, one of the original families of craftsmen who
created the gin, having passed its secret recipe down from generation to
generation.
Xoriguer's complex aromatic flavour creates an unusually delicious gin &
tonic (the X&T) and its soft wine base means that it provides an excellent
base for cocktails and can even be drunk neat as a 'sipping' gin over ice.
Traditionally it is drunk at Menorcan fiestas with 'real' lemonade in 'Pomada'
or with soda water and a medallion of lemon in 'Pallofa'.
