Domaine de Montille


Domaine de Montille is a first class Côte de Beaune domaine and one which is producing some of the purest expressions of Pinot Noir to be found in Burgundy today. The domaine was developed by Hubert de Montille, a prominent Dijon lawyer, who inherited 2.5 hectares of vineyards in Volnay in 1951 and most of the production was sold in bulk to négociants. Over the years he acquired further parcels in Volnay, as well as 4 hectares in Pommard, taking his total holdings to just short of 17 hectares.

Today the domaine is run by his son Etienne. The winemaking is traditional - partial destemming followed by a relatively long maceration period. The wines are aged in oak barriques (20-30% new) and are bottled unfiltered. These are wonderfully elegant, harmonious wines that require at least five years bottle ageing to show at their very best.

The domaine has recently been considerably extended by purchases of vineyards in Beaune, Corton, and (from 2005) the Cote de Nuits, including some marvellous Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts. There are also some fine holdings of white wine vineyards, especially Puligny Montrachet Les Caillerets.

The baby of the range nonetheless demonstrates how well Etienne de Montille has done in 2007. This is very prettily perfumed with raspberry notes as the primary fruit character. Lovely finish!

The de Montille Beaunes are all good this year but we selected the Perrières for its extra weight of rounded, cherry fruit. This offers superb value.

St Juliens is a little known vineyard in Nuits St Georges. The bouquet combines perfumed red cherry fruit with a little plumminess, with more to follow on the palate. IN its youth this is quite tightly wound but should open out over three or four years. (Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer)

This Nuits St Georges, Aux St Juliens has a fine, bright purple colour in its youth. It shows the elegance of its location on the Vosne Romanée side of Nuits St Georges. A very graceful red Burgundy to be enjoyed from 2010-2013.

This has a beautifully enticing mix of strawberry and raspberry notes along with a touch of violets and similar succulent red fruit on the palate. Exceptionally stylish for Pommard, this is a great result for the domaine.

Bright and fresh on the nose, this interesting Perrières is soft and rounded in the mouth with fine texture and generous fruit. This is a great introduction to Etienne’s wonderful reds in 2007.

Rich, soft and round strawberry fruit is evident this year in the Taillepieds, which has extra length and a more powerful finish than the elegant Champans.
