Domaine de Montcalmes

Domaine de Montcalmes

Domaine de Montcalmès is located north-west of Montpellier, and takes its name from the Montcalmès hamlet overlooking the Herault Valley. Although this family farm originally had many vineyards dedicated to white winemaking, in 1998 Jean-Marie and his daughter Frédéric Pourtalié created a special cellar specifically for reds.

The vineyards are located in two different communes; Puéchabon, where Syrah and Grenache are grown, and Aniane, where the Mouvèdre grape is grown.

Once ready for harvest, the vines are de-stemmed and crushed, and macerated in barrels for around thirty days or so. The wines are aged in oak barrels for twenty four months, and two or three grape varieties are mixed together two months before bottling. Today the vineyard produces about 50,000 bottles a year.
