Leon Beyer
The House of Léon Beyer is one of the oldest in Alsace and the family has owned vineyards at the picture-postcard village of Eguisheim since 1580. The firm now has 20 hectares of vineyards, including small holdings in the Grands Crus Eichberg and Pfersigberg. Current winemaker Marc Beyer is one of the strongest critics of the Grand Cru system in Alsace, maintaining that in many cases, it serves as a cover for the production of poorly made and inferior wines.
Today the firm produces an outstanding range of powerful, well-structured wines, including Gewürztraminers of great staying power and steely, pure Rieslings. The finest wine is the Cuvée des Comtes d'Eguisheim, which is one of Alsace's most concentrated and complex Gewürztraminers.
