C.V.N.E.

C.V.N.E. is still owned and run by the Real de Asua family whose ancestors established it back in 1879. Its full name is Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España but it more commonly known as "coonay".

In the late 1980s the firm built a spanking new stainless steel winery in the town of Haro and is now producing thoroughly "modern" style Riojas. Both red and whites are produced and their white Rioja is one of the few remaining heavily-oaked examples on the market today.

The 2 different ranges, the Vina Real and Imperial, are rich, full-bodied Riojas, with the Reservas and Grand Reservas being some of the most long-lived in the region today.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, Ready, but will improve, 12% alc.

Jesus Madrazo marries the new and old Spain with this single vineyard wine, its character informed by old vines and a combination of French and Spanish oak. Aged in barrels for two years and in  bottle for further year in bottle, this is a blend of Tempranillo 85%, Mazuelo & garnacha 5%, Graciano 10% of selected plots in the Contino Estate. Deep red cherry colour, on nose an explosion of ripe berry fruits and hints of liquorice and balsamic notes. The 2001 has the substance and the intensity to last until 2018. It is in its infancy, its fuits both red and black, its tannins still quite assertive Wait a few years then try with Beef Wellington! MORE

Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, Ready, but will improve, 13% alc.

The 2005 is made up of 90 % Tempranillo with 9 % Graciano and 1% Mazuelo (whether 1% can make a significant difference it is difficult to surmise) and has been aged for 36 months in oak from a variety of different origins. It is rich and toasty, with a fine balance between dark berried fruit, flowers, minerals and spice; worth approaching from 2010 and will keep for up to a decade thereafter.
