Château Palmer

Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Major General Palmer, who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. It is the top estate of the Margaux appellation after Château Margaux. It is located in the centre of the Margaux appellation, and its vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Franc 5%) lie on a sparse gravel plateau.

Palmer is classified as a 3ème Cru Classé and was established as a Super Second long before Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou and Pichon-Lalande, and in some years (1961, 1966, and 1983) it is as good as any wine in Bordeaux.

Palmer's relatively high Merlot content makes Palmer the closest in style of any leading Médoc properties to the great wines of Pomerol and St-Emilion.

Excellent depth of crimson. Very full, fresh, ripe fruity aroma – much more so than Pavillon Rouge just tasted in fact. Though a little taut and drily inexpressive on the palate. This is not as early maturing as the original Alter Ego mission statement might suggest. Very easy on the finish though. Well made by a gentle hand. Slightly hollow towards the finish. Juicy, sweet crunchy fruit – hint of spice (because of the Petit Verdot?). Just a lack of impact on the back palate.

In an ideal world this should be cellared for another 2-3 years with an ageing potential of another 15-20 years. A sweet, intoxicating nose of ripe, cool, red fruits with real Margaux appeal. Rich but classically restrained on the palate, it is unbelievably classy.

This Third Growth property consistently outperforms its classification and is unquestionably the top estate in Margaux after Ch. Margaux. We have been very lucky to get our hands on this pristine late-release parcel direct from the château. This is beginning to drink but in an ideal world it would be cellared for another 2 to 3 years and has the potential to age a further 15 to 20 years. However, who is going to be able to resist its sweet, intoxicating aromas of ripe, cool, red fruits and rich but classically restrained palate until then? This is an unbelievably classy Palmer that will drink until 2028.

The softest of the 80s vintages, 1985s at this level are drinking beautifully now. Soft, fragrant and smooth, this has softer edges than the 1988 and is the more forward of the two.

Fully mature and a very classic Palmer. Fruit bomb lovers need not apply; this is very classy, beautifully soft, old-fashioned claret.

An outstanding Palmer, and one of the wines of the vintage. Even at more than thirty years old this has plenty of life ahead of it. The sweet fruit is still balanced by soft tannins, and this is spot on right now. Perfect.

Another vintage where Palmer excelled beyond their 3rd growth status with a great success. This has a spicier, meatier edge than the 1975 and again is at its plateau now.

This is the smallest production of Ch. Palmer since 1991, with the vineyards requiring 300 more man hours work per hectare than in 2006. Thankfully, such sacrifice has produced a refined, silky-textured Palmer with all the early-drinking charm of the vintage but atypical intensity, luscious fruit and high Merlot content (49%). A wonderful nose of cool black fruit, minerals and toffee is followed by a mouthfilling palate with fine, ripe tannins, attractive cedar notes and a lingering, pure cassis and plum finish. Not far off the quality of Ch. Margaux itself this year.

The vintage speaks for itself. 1982 is the iconic mature Bordeaux vintage - the mature version of 2000 or 2005. This is juicier and richer than the 88 and the 85 though still with the lovely softness that only mature claret can achieve.
