Château Palmer

Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Major General Palmer, who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. It is the top estate of the Margaux appellation after Château Margaux. It is located in the centre of the Margaux appellation, and its vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Franc 5%) lie on a sparse gravel plateau.

Palmer is classified as a 3ème Cru Classé and was established as a Super Second long before Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou and Pichon-Lalande, and in some years (1961, 1966, and 1983) it is as good as any wine in Bordeaux.

Palmer's relatively high Merlot content makes Palmer the closest in style of any leading Médoc properties to the great wines of Pomerol and St-Emilion.

In an ideal world this should be cellared for another 2-3 years with an ageing potential of another 15-20 years. A sweet, intoxicating nose of ripe, cool, red fruits with real Margaux appeal. Rich but classically restrained on the palate, it is unbelievably classy.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, Ready, but will improve, 12.5% alc.

This Third Growth property consistently outperforms its classification and is unquestionably the top estate in Margaux after Ch. Margaux. We have been very lucky to get our hands on this pristine late-release parcel direct from the château. This is beginning to drink but in an ideal world it would be cellared for another 2 to 3 years and has the potential to age a further 15 to 20 years. However, who is going to be able to resist its sweet, intoxicating aromas of ripe, cool, red fruits and rich but classically restrained palate until then? This is an unbelievably classy Palmer that will drink until 2028. MORE

Fully mature and a very classic Palmer. Fruit bomb lovers need not apply; this is very classy, beautifully soft, old-fashioned claret.

1975 is a very difficult vintage to assess as it is more down to the skill of the producer than the weather. Palmer is probably one of the top wines of this vintage showing no signs of amber, and displaying sweet fruits and well-integrated tannins. MORE

Another vintage where Palmer excelled beyond their 3rd growth status with a great success. This has a spicier, meatier edge than the 1975 and again is at its plateau now. MORE

This is the smallest production of Ch. Palmer since 1991, with the vineyards requiring 300 more man hours work per hectare than in 2006. Thankfully, such sacrifice has produced a refined, silky-textured Palmer with all the early-drinking charm of the vintage but atypical intensity, luscious fruit and high Merlot content (49%). A wonderful nose of cool black fruit, minerals and toffee is followed by a mouthfilling palate with fine, ripe tannins, attractive cedar notes and a lingering, pure cassis and plum finish. Not far off the quality of Ch. Margaux itself this year.

Awesome. Showstopping. Remarkable. Palmer is all of these things in 2005. A stunning, full bodied expansive beauty of a wine, it is quintessentially Margaux with the softness of a right-bank Bordeaux. It is silky and gorgeous with unbelievably pure, firm and precise fruit on the palate. With multiple layers of complexity, the finish was so long we could still taste it - without any exaggeration - 15 minutes after leaving the château. The 78-year-old former winemaker said the only vintage to compare to the 2005 was the 1945 and in his view the 2005 surpassed the legends of 1961, 1983 and 1989 at the same stage. MORE

The 1961 Palmer has long been considered to be a legend from this vintage, and its reputation is well-deserved. The wine is at its apogee, with an extraordinary, sweet, complex nose with aromas of flowers, cassis, toast, and minerals. It is intensely concentrated, offering a cascade of lavishly ripe, full-bodied, opulent fruit, soft tannins, and a voluptuous finish. This is a decadent Palmer, unparalleled since in quality with the exception of 1983 and 1989.
