Backsberg
Charles Back originally established Backsberg Estate in 1916 and his grandson, Michael, now runs it. The farm has nearly 200 hectares of vineyards situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains in the Paarl Region.
Backsberg was the first winery in South Africa to barrel-ferment their white wines and their Chardonnay has been a benchmark for quality in the last 15 years. Hardy Laubser now makes the wines and produces toasty, elegant and softly nutty Chardonnays that have the depth of fruit and structure to reward medium-term cellaring.
