Hartenberg Estate

Hartenberg, located 12 kilometres north-west of Stellenbosch, has a history stretching back over 300 years. However, it was only after being purchased by Ken Mackenzie in 1986 that its true potential began to be realised.

Extensive replanting and investments in temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation vats are amongst many of the developments there in the last 15 years.

The soils mostly consist of decomposed granite on a clay base and a large range of high quality red and whites are produced. Shiraz is what Hartenberg really excels at, producing wines with a velvet texture redolent of pepper and cinnamon and packed with spicy, juicy, brambly fruit. Winemaker Carl Schultz is at the top of his game and is responsible for some of the very best wines coming out of South Africa.
