Domaine Comte Armand

Pascal Marchand has now moved on after 15 years at Comte Armand. During his time in charge he completely transformed the domaine, elevating its ranking to that of the greatest estate in Pommard. His place has been taken by Benjamin Leroux who has been working part time at the domaine during his studies since 1991.

Benjamin Leroux, still in his thirties and newly married to an English girl from Silverstone, has been in charge at Comte Armand since 1999. He is one of Burgundy's most vociferous advocates of bio-dynamic viticulture (with a particular interest in lunar cycles) and his No 1 spot in Bourgogne Aujourd'hui magazine's Top 10 for the next decade came as no surprise.

Cuvée of Auxey Duresses comes from purchased grapes from three different vineyards on the flank of the hillside where Auxey takes over from Meursault. The wine is aged in larger barrels so as not to show too much oak. The cuvée is named for an ancestor of the Comte Armand’s, Nicolas Marey, who bought extensive vineyards just after the French revolution.

Comte Armand's Pommard Clos des Epéneaux must surely be considered among the great red wines of all Burgundy. But don't be in a hurry to drink it.

Sensual, delicious and harmonious, this is terrific-value red Burgundy and the good news is, it doesn’t require much cellaring; you only need to be patient for twelve months before you can crack open a bottle. "Benjamin Leroux has made another outstanding cuvee from his favourite Auxey Duresses vineyards next to Meursault. This is an energetic, fresh wine, not as full-bodied as Meursault but with many of the same fruit characteristics. Salmon steak with a beurre blanc sauce would be an excellent partner, or pan seared coquilles St Jacques. Bottled for us with a stelvin screwcap for extra freshness." This is made from the ‘young’ vines of the Clos des Épeneaux but ‘young’ here means nearly 25-years-old. Intense and powerful with delicious flavours of exotic raspberry fruit, this has a mouthfilling texture and is both seamless and sensual on the palate. 	Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Pinot Noir, For laying down, 14% alc. Fremiets was the first vineyard to be picked in Volnay, which is not unusual. This has suave, approachable fruit to excite the palate and finishes on a lovely note of pure, ripe strawberry. With good length, this is well balanced and will be a delicious wine for the medium term. MORE Drink: 2010 -2014 .
