Cantine Sociale del Gavi
The Cantine Sociale del Gavi is essentially the Gavi growers co-operative, yet produces wines of a calibre rarely associated with co-operatives. It is managed by Roberto Sarotto and consists of 22 growers and over 30 hectares of prime Gavi/Cortese vineyards.
Roberto produces four Gavi di Gavi, of which La Maddalena is his top wine. La Maddalena is a single vineyard with 50-year old vines planted on tufo soils. Roberto hyper-oxidises the must to promote terroir expression, then ferments it for longer than usual at 15 celsius, together with 100% malolactic fermentation, andttles in May (slightly later than usual). They are full-flavoured, vibrant and wonderfully minerally wines.
