King Estate, Oregon

King Estate was founded in 1992 in the Lorane Valley south-west of Eugene in Oregon. The 110,000-square-foot winery sits atop a hill surrounded by vineyards. It resembles a French chateau, albeit a rather large one. The total estate is more than 800 acres, and about 225 of those are vineyard. Eventually, that will rise to about 350. When completed, King Estate will have one of the most clonally diverse vineyards for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay in North America.

With three trellising systems and two of Oregon's most ideal soil types for viticulture, King Estate's vineyards are dry farmed to produce smaller cluster weights with more flavours and aromas. General Manager Brad Biehl, a native Oregonian, oversees the vineyards while Ray Walsh looks after the winemaking. Each vineyard lot is vinified separately. "We both look at each vineyard as an integral part of the blend," says Biehl. "This small-lot fermentation is really a great educational tool. We taste and evaluate, taste and evaluate, then have an opportunity to see how (each lot) fits into the blend."

King Estate is one of the rising stars of the Oregon wine scene and is now amongst the elite of Oregon Pinot Noir producers.
