Château La Variere
A very well-respected Loire producer which produces a wide range of wines, though is particularly noted for its sweet white wines from the tiny appellations of Quarts de Chaume and Bonnezeaux. It is owned and managed by Jacques Beaujeau.
The chai and cellars are located in Brissac in the eastern section of the Anjou-Saumur appellation. The domaine consists of 88 hectares of vineyards - 68 hectares are planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay and Grolleau while the remainder is planted with Chenin Blanc.
The small amounts of Bonnezeaux and Quarts De Chaume are produced from hand-picked botrytised Chenin Blanc grapes, which are fermented, in small oak barrels. Beaujeau`s sweet wines are intense, yet remarkably well-balanced and harmonious. They age marvellously.
