Domaine De Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier is one of the few Graves estates to produce both first class reds and whites. The property was purchased by the Ricard family in 1865 and remained in their hands until it was bought by the Bernard distilling company in 1983. Domaine De Chevalier has 35 hectares of vines and red wine accounts for 80% of the production. Made from a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months.

Domaine de Chevalier is fortunate to have such a fine team to run its affairs. Olivier, whose family business owns the estate, is the outgoing but canny administrator whilst Rémi Edange is hands-on, knowing every vine and every barrel. Whilst their white wines have always been amongst the very finest, the reds were simpler affairs. But from the 1995 vintage onwards greater flair and concentration was in evidence. The quality curve is now further accentuated by the team's bold move to appoint Stéphane Derenoncourt, of La Mondotte fame, as consultant winemaker. Domaine De Chevalier is classified as a Graves Cru Classé.

Ripe fruit and hints of tobacco hit the nose before you discover the palate has well-balanced acidity and silky tannins. There’s a good concentration a blackberries and earthiness with a slight hint of liquorice. As with the estate’s white, the finish goes on and on. This is one for the traditional Bordeaux lover.

Domaine de Chevalier always seems to know how to please. The 2008 has a fantastic, opulent nose of liquid blackcurrants and a concentrated, intense palate of dark cassis fruit but with that lovely freshness indicative of the vintage. This is a wine with plenty of flesh on its bones, but one which combines power with grace and balance. Ripe, grainy tannins and a savoury, mineral finish complete this very rewarding wine. MORE

Domaine de Chevalier is a property on form, and one that remains under the radar; it offers exceptional value for money. This beautifully pure 2006 has the charm and fresh acidity that the best 2006s show, underpinned with a firm and unforced tannic structure. This is very well made indeed.

No wonder Olivier Bernard was beaming. His 2007 is the latest in a line of stunning vintages which, apart from the amazing 2005, is his best wine since 2000. A brooding, spicy, damson nose leads on to a dense palate with blackberry, crushed cassis, tobacco and leather with a long, pure finish. The balanced, mouth-filling fruit is cloaked in velvety but significant tannins (higher than 2005) bestowing the wine with a fine, masculine, early-drinking style. Fantastic in the context of any vintage, and not far off the quality of Haut-Brion, this is an essential buy for any Claret-lover this year.

I fell in love with this, not only from barrel 3 years ago, but last autumn when in bottle. Sensational wine, I bought 3 cases in different sizes. Lovely contrast to St Juliens, Pauillacs. The best wines of 2005 show an irrepressible energy and as soon as the aromatics of the Chevalier hit you, you can feel the vigour in the rich intoxicating black fruit and the minerally, gravelly overtones that only great Graves can offer. The seemingly endless finish and perfect harmony of this wine, combined with the firm yet supple tannins, immensely concentrated fruit and life-giving acidity look set to make this a legendary Dom. de Chevalier.

Owner Olivier Bernard's attitude to nature and wine, working the soil naturally and respecting the terroir and the style of the vintage, makes him a Burgundian at heart according to Jasper Morris MW, which is praise indeed. 2006 was a Cabernet vintage in Pessac, according to Olivier, and the extra Cabernet in his blend (67% CS and 4% CF) has made his 2006 more structured than usual. It has an exotic, creamy blackberry nose, a wonderful harmony and structure, and a lovely concentration of pure, minerally cassis fruit with coffee hints. This is another tour de force of outstanding quality. Drink: 2012-2025.

One of the few properties in the Graves to produce both first class red and white wines, Domaine de Chevalier is that rare breed of Bordeaux estate where quality goes in hand with reliability – year in, year out. Chevalier’s superb 1989 vintage is plump and forward, merging sweet cherry and blackcurrant aromas with a delicious hint of herbs and fleshy fruit. Silky, smooth and supremely intergrated, this is most certainly a wine to MORE
