Château Figeac

Château Figeac is one of the leading St. Emilion estates and its wine, with its high Cabernet content, has often been described as the most Médoc-like in St-Emilion. Figeac is owned by Thierry Manoncourt and is located in the north-west of the appellation with its vineyards adjoining those of Cheval Blanc. Its 40 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 35%, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 35%) lie on a deep, Médoc-like gravel topsoil ('Graves') over a flinty, iron-rich subsoil.

The alcoholic fermentation takes place in wood and the malolactic in stainless steel. The wine is matured in 100% new oak barriques for 18-22 months. Ideally, the wines need at least 10 years-bottle ageing to show at their best. Figeac is classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classé (B).

Set in the heart of St Emilion alongside Cheval Blanc, the wines of Petit Figeac are often considered the ‘most Mèdoc of St Emilions’. This is due to the gravelly soil in this part of the appellation, which means that Château Figeac uses completely different proportions of ... MORE

A monumental effort in 2008. True to style it maintains an almost Médocain allure (the Cabernet components represent 70% of the blend) with finesse, freshness and length. Lovely ripe fruit. Should fill out with bottle age. Drink 2016-2030.

"A minty, herbal characteristic combines with scents of incense, black currants, cherries, smoke, and licorice in this complex, pure 2001. It was a bit closed on the three occasions I tasted it, but it was certainly medium-bodied and elegant, with loads of nobility/pedigree, and the ... MORE

Horizontal Tasting of 2005s on 12/11/09.  Because of its high proportion of Cabernets, Figeac is always the most restrained (and sometimes misunderstood) of the best St. Emilions, with a lacy quality in lighter years, but with a beguiling presentation in the best.  In 2005 the wine ... MORE

Fabulously fine and ripe tannins coat this intense kernel of highly defined fruit. Screamingly good and in direct competition in quality terms with St Emilion rivals 10 times the price. The only downside is you cant really open it up now and get on with it...very frustrating! However have a little ... MORE
