Chateau du Glana

Chateau du Glana

One of the leading cru bourgeoisie properties in St-Julien, Château du Glana was built up by the Kaelin family in the first half of the 20th century. Nestled between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south, the wines tend to display a balance between the power and depth of the former, and the charm and suppleness of the latter.

Chateau du Glana sits alongside the famous D2 “Route des Chateaux”, between the villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien. An enviable location opposite the elegant Ch. Ducru Beaucaillou, on deep gravel soils which are ideally suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chateau was built in 1870 and the original 5 hectare vineyard has been extended over the years to 44 hectares, by buying plots from the 3rd Growth Ch. Lagrange – this is a serious vineyard.

Everything about the winemaking is a blend of the best bits of traditional and modern. Temperature controlled fermentation, but 12 months ageing in one third new oak barrels. Fined using egg whites and lightly filtered, the resulting wines could be termed modern in style, but retain the classical elegance of a great St Julien. They show pure, bright fruit, supple tannins and a long, lingering persistence on the finish.
