Château Haut-Bages Libéral

Château Haut-Bages-Libéral is one of the least known Pauillac estates but produces exemplary clarets at extremely competitive prices. Since 1983 it has been owned by the Taillan Group who also own Chasse-Spleen and Cos d`Estournel. It was run during the 80s and early 90s by Bernadette Villars and, since her death, has been run by her daughter, Claire.

The 29-hectare property is superbly sited in the south of the Pauillac appellation between Château Latour and the 2 Pichons. The vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Merlot 17%, Petit Verdot 3%) lie on deep gravel beds over limestone. The wines are matured in oak barriques (40% new) for 16-18 months. Since Claire Villars has been at the helm, the wines have become deeper in colour and more concentrated, with notable depth of fruit. It is classified as a 5ème Cru Classé.

Run by the delightful livewire that is Claire Villars, this underrated estate continues its climb up the Pauillac hit parade in 2007. With a hefty 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and only 10% Merlot, this is gorgeously feminine, almost Margaux-esque. Its pure, cassis nose, and elegant blackberry, chocolate and cedar flavours are supported by attractive but firm tannins. Well-integrated, pretty, refined and approachable, this is as full of personality as Claire's bright orange winery (her favourite colour). With refreshing honesty, she compares this to her 1999 although we think it is rather better than that. A delightful 2007 Pauillac. MORE

The moment we tasted Ch. Haut-Bages Libéral we were blown away by its sheer class and star quality. Having tasted in Pauillac all day, this was like a breath of fresh air and was, by a mile, the first wine to make our list of Top 10 Value wines to buy. With a beautiful mix of red and black fruit, this was complex, intense and powerful with a classic cedar nose, fine elegant tannins and chocolate complexity. Rounded off by a lovely juicy finish and smooth fruit, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot remains one of our favourite wines of the vintage. MORE

Great value traditional Claret. Like Batailley with a bit more flair.
(Simon Staples, Sales & Marketing Director)

"Another sleeper of the vintage, this under-priced, beautifully made Pauillac exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, tapenade, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin and low acidity, it is a pure, expressive wine."
