Domaine Zind Humbrecht


The wines of Olivier Humbrecht M.W. need little introduction, possessing great depth, exactitude as well as generosity…like the man himself.

The Humbrecht family viticultural roots can be traced back to The Thirty Years War of 1620. Today they own forty hectares across five villages in the Haut-Rhin, the southern half of the picturesque vineyards overlapping the Vosges foothills, treasured for its idyllic climate, tapestry of terroirs as much for its half-timbered houses.

The domaine has vines in 4 Grands Crus - Rangen (Thann) 5.5 ha, Brand (Turckheim) 2.4 ha, Hengst (Wintzenheim) 1.4 ha, Goldert (Gueberschwihr) 0.9 ha as well as Single Vineyards; Rotenberg (Wintzenheim) 1.8 ha, Clos Häuserer (Wintzenheim) 1.2 ha,  Herrenweg (Turkheim) 11.5 ha, Clos Jebsal (Turkheim) 1.3 ha,  Heimbourg (Turkheim) 4 ha and Clos Windsbuhl (Hunawihr) 5.2 ha.

Olivier has arguably overseen the most notable improvements in the estate’s illustrious history: a new cellar in 1992 while retaining the traditional ‘foudre’ oval barrels; initiating biodynamic practices in 1997 (certified in 2002); and the buying of a horse in 2006 to plough the vineyards!

Zind Humbrecht's 2007 Riesling Clos Häuserer shows all the limestone/calcareous character this grape variety can acquire from a healthy, slow ripening vintage: lots of minerals, juicy acidity and good weight. The lower than usual alcohol level makes it a fantastic food wine and its delicate finish is more enhanced by its acidity and minerality than sheer power. MORE

"This wonderfully zippy, pebbly lime focused dry (2 grams residual sugar) wine comes from youngish (23 years old!) vines perched overlooking the village of Turckheim, giving a more accessible example of fine Alsace Riesling from a top producer. Still quite minerally this will unfurl over the next 12-24 months. Delicious with smoked mackerel."

As with other great vineyards, Grand Cru Brand was in fact riper in 2006 than 2005, able to shrug off the Sept rains thanks to the permeability of its friable granite soils, and ultimately to develop serious noble rot. The 56 year old vines contributed a scintillating purity to this fully botrytised wine, charged with barley-sugar intensity and stunning persistence. Off -dry at 70 grams/litre. Drinking now with foie grase but will age till 2026 at least.

Showing an expressive nose of musky, bittersweet floral aromatics, leading to a palate that is full of mineral quality and as dry as it could possibly be. The acidity in 2007 Riesling, Clos Windsbuhlis is intense, but is complemented by ripe grapefruit notes, wet stones and minerality, striking a wonderful balance. Those with a mind to cellar for longer can do so safely. MORE

Zind Humbrecht's 2007 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl shows an aromatic nose of exotic fruits and jasmine flowers that gives way to a palate of extreme elegance and well balanced sweetness. Concentrated flavours fill the mouth with lush lychee notes, honeysuckle, exotic spices and tropical fruits. Boisterously expressive yet graceful, this will hold for many years, gaining more layers of additional complexity. MORE

The wines from Clos Windsbuhl tend to be delicate but with great balancing acidity and 2005 was an exceptional vintage for this vineyard. With the grapes reaching perfect ripeness and noble rot transforming the grapes into rich, sweet berries, this is arguably the pick of the crop. The palate is tight, compact and packed with seductive notes of honey and apricot, but there is also an immense raciness and minerality showing huge potential for the years to come. Drink 2010-2025. As cool as a cucumber, Clos Hauserer's limestone-rich soils make it one of Olivier's most minerally wines. The nose brims with chalky floral notes and limey purity while the palate shows such linearity, such 'droiteur', with only 15 grams/litre of residual sugar. Clos Häuserer is one of Olivier’s less well-known vineyards, lying in the shadow of Grand Cru Hengst near Turckheim. Yet it’s perhaps this very fact that has imbued the wine with an unassuming profile; something not lost on the locals, with whom it has become a hit apparently. This is a dry wine for earlier drinking till 2016, with plaice ideally.

As with other wines originating from the single Clos Windsbuhl vineyard (one that famously missed out on 'Grand Cru' status due to not being submitted!), one's struck by the cool minerally energy, a wine that speaks more of the soil than the fruit per se. The 10 month long ferment tailed off leaving an off-dry style with 49 grams of residuel, yet the palate is fantastically focused, charged with bristling electricity, leaving an oh! so cleansing pear purity. Needs time, till 2014 to see its best. Great with creamy veal or white meat platters.
