Balthazar

Balthazar is owned by part time sex therapist Anita Bowen and is now producing one of the Barossa's most distinguished Shiraz wines from her tiny vineyard located in the Maranega subzone of the Barossa Valley. Balthazar's vineyard was replanted in the 1990s on what was an original vineyard in the 19th century. Since inception, the vineyard ethos has been to produce super-premium fruit utilizing the best of vineyard practice and sustainable environmental management.

The Shiraz vines were painstakingly sourced form one of the oldest known vineyards in the Barossa Valley whose origins date back to 1847. The vines' roots are embedded in a rich layer of red ironstone above deep layers of chalk limestone, assisting low cropping and premium quality fruit production. Planted on a 3 metre by 1.5 metre spacing with a single fruiting wire, the vines are hand-pruned to ensure small parcels of grapes bearing rich intensity of fruit and colour.
