Thelema
Jazz loving Gyles Webb, an accountant by training, was bitten by the wine bug in the late 1970s. Against all rationale he quit his job, took a degree in viticulture and oneology and then gained valuable experience by working in wineries in France , California and South Africa. Thelema Farm was purchased by his wife's family Trust in 1983 - in 1985 Gyles became the full time winemaker.
The vineyards are situated at the top of the breathtaking Helshoogte Pass high up in the Simonsberg range of mountains. The high altitude-between 370 and 640 metres above sea level - extends the growing season and in the summer the cooler night time temperatures ensure that sugar ripeness does not gallop ahead of physiological ripeness. The vines are cared for meticulously with cover crop and drip irrigation being the latest additions. Gyles`s approach in the winery is equally perfectionist and the result is perfectly crafted complex wines that reflect their marginally cooler origins and are testament to Gyles`s winemaking skills.
