Saxenburg
Saxenburg can date its history back to 1693. It was purchased in 1989 by Swiss businessman Adrian Buhrer and is one of the leading producers of high quality wine in South Africa today. Its 80 hectares of vines are situated on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills above Kuils River and overlook both the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. Cool, summer breezes that come off the ocean in the afternoon play a crucial role in determining the quality of the wines. It means that, during the crucial ripening season, complex fruit aromas and high natural acidities are preserved at full ripeness.
Nico Van de Merwe has been the winemaker since 1990 and produces wines of finesse, harmony and complexity rarely equalled in South Africa - in particular his Shiraz is arguably the best in the country.
