Antico Broilo

The small estate of Antico Broilo is well placed in Prepotto, a northern jewel in the Colli Orientali del Friuli appellation. The village has the unusual reputation for being famous for its red wines; notably for being home to the indigenous Schioppettino varietal.
The Durì family is now in its fourth generation, yet it was only in 1998 that Vanni and his son Massimo started to bottle the totality of their crop. They have 7 hectares of very old (70 years) and more recent (4 years) vines covering Refosco, Schioppettino, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.

Vineyards management is classic: all is trained with guyot system, with the yields kept low in order to ripen the fruit properly in such a northern corner; Refosco and Schioppettino, in particular, are very late picked to achieve the maximum richness & spiciness.Vinification is based on the now familiar concept that 'less is better': total destemming, fermentation without selected yeast of 12/15 days, malolactic fermentation in barrels (33% new), ageing on lees with no sulphur, racking only if necessary, bottling with no filtration.
