Yarra Yering

In 1969 Dr Bailey Carrodus founded Yarra Yering after a lengthy search for the perfect vineyard site. He chose deserted but promising territory near Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. Today, Yarra Yering produces concentrated blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Italian and Portuguese varieties as well as elegant single variety Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot wines. The wines are in such high demand that the cellar door only opens for two days each year and most of the annual production is sold within the first hour.

Yarra Yering's philosophy is to make classic but elegant wines. They attribute their success to the outstanding quality of fruit that grows on their unique terroir. Despite the widespread Australian trend of the 1960s to adjust soil characteristics, Yarra Yering's vineyards of gravel and clay loam remained untouched, leaving them with pure soils high in natural minerals.

These, combined with the cool climate of the Yarra Valley, low-yielding old vines and no irrigation, have resulted in wines of very concentrated, pure fruit character with high natural acidity, fine minerality and exceptional longevity.

The blended wines are known simply by number. Dry Red No. 1 is Yarra Yering's original, structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend with Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Dry Red No. 2 is a supple, Côte-Rôtie-style Shiraz, with a touch of Viognier and Marsanne. The exact proportions of each blend are never revealed.

Single variety wines contain 100% of each named grape. The Underhill Shiraz came into being in the late 1980s after the neighbouring Underhill vineyard was acquired; this is a broad, muscular Shiraz similar to a Rhône Hermitage in style. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay have beautifully pure fruit supported by perfectly balanced acidity and a subtle use of oak, while the Merlot is a voluptuous rarity indeed, with just a barrel or two made only in years when perfect ripeness has been achieved.

Last but not least is the Potsorts - Yarra Yering's innovative after-dinner speciality, made with indigenous Portuguese varieties and fortified in a Vintage Port style.

The legendary Dr Carrodus sadly passed away in September 2008., leaving us with an Australian icon that delivers very special wines.

Forget Australian Chianti, think is excellent. An initially austere, cedary nose is followed by gorgeous sweet fruit in the mouth with a seductive richness and velvety texture. This is perfectly balanced by a firm yet ripe tannic structure. Delicious now, give this a couple of years to show its best. MORE

This has the typical Yarra Yering `Old World' crushed leaf Cabernet Sauvignon character along with sleek cassis fruit and generous plumpness derived from the Merlot and Malbec. This will drink well for at least 20 years and will make for an interesting comparison to top 2005 Clarets in the future.

"..Purple-colored, it emits an alluring fragrance of smoky oak, toast, vanilla, pencil lead, olives, black currant, and blackberry liqueur....Impressively balanced, all components are well-integrated, and the finish lasts for 60 seconds."

"The Underhill vineyard was bought in the late eighties, with the intention of the fruit going into the No 2. However the rich clay content in the soil produced fruit that had an identity all of its own, so the Underhill was born. The Underhill Shiraz is a much broader, muscular style of Shiraz than the Dry Red No 2, not dissimilar to Hermitage, with a huge core of black fruit, leather and black pepper notes. With age, the Underhill is perhaps the most individual wine I have tasted with savoury meat and stewed fruit aromas coming to the fore. This has been a favourite with Berrys' customers for many years now."

"The 2004 Dry Red Wine No. 2 (95% Shiraz and 5% Marsanne and Viognier), while also amazing, is more closed, tannic, and harder to fully penetrate than the Shiraz. With aeration, the bouquet reveals notions of exotic Asian spices intermixed with flowers, blackberries, and cassis. In the mouth, the wine struts its stuff with a full-bodied, layered, broad, flavorful, concentrated style and moderately high tannin in the finish. This fabulous bambino needs to be cellared for 2-4 years and drunk over the following two decades."

A much broader, denser wine than the No. 2, the Underhill Shiraz is from separate parcel of vines adjacent to the winery. The original plan was for the fruit to go into No 2. blend, however the stronger clay content in the soils has produced a wine with an identity all of its own, with remarkable texture and meaty, smoky bacon notes that offers the juiciest of tannins. With the soaring heat of the last few vintages the Underhill has upped a gear in concentration and extraction; however the harmony remains with the balanced acid guiding all of this fruit. MORE

The classic No 1. blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with additions of Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Another long, hot and dry growing season resulted in a big brooding beast that will require even more cellaring than usual. The nose of currants, mint and leafy aromas give way to a huge core of concentrated fruit, offering up notes of liquorice, cassis and blueberry. Huge, but very fine tannins with balanced oak, there is a sense of precision and freshness despite the magnitude of this wine. MORE

A Northern Rhône blend of predominantly Shiraz with a hint of Viognier and an even smaller hint of Marsanne. This is the most seductive and graceful wine in the Yarra Yering range. There is an underlying power to this wine, with the Viognier offering some lift and aromatics to the nose, whilst the core of pure, silky black fruit on the palate is downright sexy! Although this is a joy to drink in its youth, it will certainly benefit from 5 years or so cellaring and will drink superbly for decades. MORE

"A combination of 70-80% Cabernet Sauvignon, about 20% Merlot, and dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2004 Dry Red Wine No. 1 offers a beautiful perfume of incense, dried herbs, red and black fruits, damp earth, and cedar. With fabulous fruit purity, medium to full body, and moderately high tannin, this rich, stunning red should age effortlessly for twenty years. It will be even better with 2-4 more years of bottle age."

"The 2003 Dry Red Wine No. 1 (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, etc.) exhibits a deep ruby color along with attractive cedary, earthy, red and black fruits, loamy soil, and dried herb characteristics, and a spicy, heady finish with plenty of glycerin (although the alcohol is only 12.5% on the label). It is a structured, big, distinctive Australian red boasting loads of complexity and character. It should drink well for a decade."
