Château Pitray

Castillon lies on the right bank of the Dordogne, and its 2700 hectares of vineyards are mostly found to the north of the town, bordering on the St. Emilion satellites to the west. Merlot predominates in the blend, along with Cabernet Franc - only small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon are grown, as it does not ripen easily here. The wines are similar to those found in St. Emilion, albeit at far cheaper prices.

Château de Pitray is acknowledged as the leading property in Castillon and is the equal of many St-Emilion estates. Its Merlot-dominated wine is dry, medium-bodied and rich in ripe supple fruit which is balanced by sufficent tannic backbone to ensure good medium-term ageing potential.
