Surprisingly accessible as well as supple, this 2001 St.-Julien reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a rich bouquet of smoke, roasted vegetables, black currants, plums, licorice, and Asian spices. Velvety-textured and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit, and a plump, expansive, plush texture, this is an atypically forward Gruaud Larose to drink now and over the next 12-14 years.

Supple well-mannered palate entry. Then dry. Less luscious than Chateau Lagrange, and less luscious than many vintages of Gruaud, but it may well last longer.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a soft, sensual bouquet with earthy red-berried fruit, touches of sandalwood and truffle all with very fine delineation and vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, dry tannins; well integrated oak, perhaps just a touch of attenuation towards the finish but nicely focused. Very linear compared to others and it tails of very abruptly.
